UAE Strengthens Food Security Through Strategic African Partnerships

The United Arab Emirates is strategically focusing on enhancing trade with Africa to achieve food security, responding to the continent’s rapid economic growth. As the largest trading partner for sub-Saharan African countries, besides China, the UAE aims to expand its investments across various sectors, including agriculture, renewable energy, and logistics. This initiative seeks not only to bolster food supplies but also to leverage Africa’s potential as a key economic player on the global stage. The commitment to strengthen these commercial ties is underscored by substantial financial investments projected in the coming years.

Investment Across Key Sectors

The UAE has already made significant inroads into African markets, channeling investments into diverse sectors ranging from agriculture to energy and transportation. As reported by Bloomberg, the Emirates is also expanding its service industries, notably aviation. This multifaceted approach is integral to fostering deeper economic relationships within the continent, which is becoming increasingly attractive to foreign investors.

A Promising Economic Landscape

According to Saeed bin Mubarak Al-Hajri, Minister of State, “The opportunities in Africa appear more promising than investments in mature or declining markets. It’s exceedingly difficult for other markets to compete with the prospects in Africa, in my opinion.” The UAE stands among the leading investors in the region, having allocated approximately $119 billion to Africa from 2020 to 2024 alone. This staggering figure highlights the UAE’s commitment to strengthening trade relations with African countries.

Significant Trade Milestones

Recent data from the International Monetary Fund indicates that bilateral trade with the sub-Saharan region surpassed $75 billion last year, more than triple the amount recorded a decade ago. Al-Hajri mentioned during a recent interview at the G20 Summit in Johannesburg that the UAE is exploring comprehensive economic partnership agreements with several African nations, complementing already existing accords with countries like Mauritius, Morocco, and the Central African Republic.

Future Goals for Bilateral Trade

As part of its ambitious strategy, the UAE aims to double global bilateral trade to reach an astounding $4 trillion by 2031. “Food security strategy is a key focus area when it comes to Africa,” said Al-Hajri. “We want to look into resources and logistics, connecting our aviation and ports sector with Africa.” This vision not only fortifies trade but also reinforces the UAE’s role in global supply chains, ensuring a steady flow of goods between the UAE and the African continent.
