UAE Advances Global Water Investment as a Top Priority

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is advocating for the prioritisation of water as a global economic and investment priority as part of its ongoing efforts to achieve the goals set forth by the United Nations Water Conference 2026. This pivotal conference will take place in Abu Dhabi in December, marking a significant commitment by the UAE to transition from dialogue to actionable solutions. The aim is to enhance investment in practical solutions through interactive discussions that bring together governments, the private sector, investors, and innovators, thereby fostering the development of more sustainable and resilient water systems that can significantly impact human lives.

Establishing UAE as a Global Leader in Water Sustainability

Through its role as a host, alongside Senegal, the UAE is strengthening its global standing in supporting water-related issues and sustainable development. The upcoming conference is centred on making water a global economic and investment priority, while accelerating the implementation of the sixth Sustainable Development Goal (SDG)—which focuses on ensuring availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all—by mobilising finance, technology, innovation, and partnerships.

The Economic Imperative of Water

During a recent press conference at the National Media Council, Abdullah Balalaa, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Energy and Sustainability, highlighted the critical role of water as a fundamental driver of economic growth and development. He noted that while water issues may not always feature prominently in budgets, they are foundational to all aspects of development and economic activity, linking industrial production, technology, and global supply chains. “In reality, nearly every product and service that drives our economies relies on reliable access to water,” Balalaa explained. “If we are serious about implementation, we must also be equally committed to financing. Investing in water is an investment in humanity. Governments alone cannot meet the vast investment needs required to build resilient water systems globally. We need commercial banks, investors, development finance institutions, multilateral development banks, philanthropic organisations, and the private sector to understand that water is both an economic and investment priority.”

Innovative Dialogues at the Conference

The forthcoming United Nations Water Conference 2026 will feature a significant dialogue titled “Investing in Water,” which is the sixth interactive dialogue agreed upon by UN member states, underscoring the crucial role of finance and investment in advancing various aspects of the water agenda. For the first time, a UN water conference will dedicate a dialogue to mobilising finance, technology, innovation, and capacity-building critical for achieving widespread progress.

Balalaa remarked that the six interactive dialogues will be central to the conference, bringing together governments, diverse voices and perspectives, and partners capable of supporting implementation. The first five dialogues—focusing on water for people, water for prosperity, water for the planet, water for cooperation, and water for multilateral paths—collectively provide the necessary frameworks and platforms to transition from dialogue to achievement, from ambitions to action. The “Investing in Water” dialogue will add a vital dimension by exploring how to align and mobilise financing, technology, innovation, and capacities needed to convert ambitions into projects and turn projects into tangible impacts.

Global Participation and Outcomes

Balalaa further stated, “The world will come to Abu Dhabi in December, bringing with it diverse experiences, challenges, technologies, and ideas. The UAE’s responsibility, as a co-host, is to integrate these differing perspectives, highlighting the interconnectedness of all parties and demonstrating how water enhances the relationships between economic growth and sustainability, innovation and opportunities, as well as investment and human development. We aim to connect those needing solutions with those who have the capacity to develop, finance, and implement them while ensuring that these discussions and commitments continue far beyond the conference’s conclusion.” He added that, “Our ambition for the closing of the United Nations Water Conference 2026 in Abu Dhabi is stronger partnerships, clearer investment pathways, technologies moving towards application, and tangible commitments that contribute to improving people’s lives.”

Mechanisms Supporting the Conference Goals

The United Nations Water Conference 2026 will feature two integrated spaces designed to support its goals: the “Blue Zone,” sanctioned by the UN, and the “Oasis,” hosted by the UAE to broaden participation and enrich the global dialogue on water. Both spaces will collaborate to connect policy with implementation, investment with opportunities, and innovation with solutions, strengthening partnerships and facilitating the transition from commitments to sustainable and actionable results.

The “Blue Zone” will host the official UN programme, including the six interactive dialogues, plenary sessions, and approved side events, while the “Oasis” will serve as the main venue for exhibitions and pavilions, offering a comprehensive programme of sessions and activities over three days. This will foster the exchange of expertise and ideas, alongside the inaugural Abu Dhabi Water and Energy Week, hosted by the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy, focusing this year on the water sector.

A Landmark Event

The United Nations Water Conference 2026, co-hosted by the UAE and Senegal, will take place from 8 to 10 December 2026 at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC), aiming to unify global efforts and expedite the implementation of the sixth Sustainable Development Goal, ensuring water availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.

This conference marks the third UN water conference since 1977, being the first led by two nations from the Global South and the first UN conference dedicated to the sixth Sustainable Development Goal.

Over the span of three days, the conference is expected to attract thousands of participants from governmental bodies, the business and finance communities, multilateral organisations, civil society, academia, and the innovation sector.

• The “Blue Zone” and “Oasis” serve as platforms connecting policy with financing, innovation with solutions, and development with sustainability.

• Six interactive dialogues will form the core of the conference.
