Abu Dhabi to Dubai Travel Time Cut to 50 Minutes

In a significant development for commuters in the UAE, the journey time between Abu Dhabi and Dubai is set to be reduced to just 50 minutes. This initiative is part of a broader expansion plan that includes a wide range of infrastructure projects aimed at improving road connectivity and public transport efficiency across the region. With this new measure, the hope is to transform how residents and visitors navigate between these two major cities.

Broad Infrastructure Investment Plans

Minister of Energy and Infrastructure Suhail Mohamed Faris Al Mazrouei announced that the plan encompasses a comprehensive set of projects amounting to 170 billion dirhams. This investment includes 11 billion dirhams for federal roads, 95 billion for local roads, and 64 billion for the Union Railway projects. Al Mazrouei shared these insights during a recent session of the Federal National Council, discussing the government’s policies regarding road safety and traffic flow.

Enhancing Public Transportation

Al Mazrouei emphasized that enhancing public transport capabilities is a crucial aspect of the initiative. “The development of public transport includes a fully integrated network between Dubai, Sharjah, and Ajman, featuring 10 bus routes along with rapid BRT buses, which is expected to boost bus usage by 45% and increase maritime transport contributions by 35%,” he stated. Integrating multi-modal transport and transitioning to smart transport systems are also key parts of this strategy aimed at alleviating traffic congestion.

Impact on Freight and Passenger Services

The vision for the rail sector is equally ambitious, with plans to increase freight capacity to 60 million tons by 2030 while also reducing transportation costs by 30%. The goal is to transfer around 5,600 freight trips daily to the railway system, contributing to the transport of 36.5 million passengers annually. With the Union Railway network extending 900 kilometers, the time taken to travel from Abu Dhabi to Dubai will now be down to just 50 minutes, while the journey from Abu Dhabi to Fujairah will take only 100 minutes. This move is anticipated to significantly encourage more commuters to opt for trains over traditional transport methods.

Future Developments in Collective Transport

The initiative also includes plans for 21,591 public transport vehicles, 393 planned vehicle routes, and 40 maritime lines covering 74 stations. Additionally, there will be 11 trains connecting all emirates through light rail systems, alongside 129 metro trains within heavy rail infrastructure, and 53 metro stations to support enhanced urban mobility.

This extensive investment and development effort to reduce journey times and improve connectivity, particularly the reduction of travel time between Abu Dhabi and Dubai to just 50 minutes, showcases the UAE’s commitment to building a world-class transportation network that meets the demands of its rapidly growing population.
