The Sudanese Armed Forces are currently at the center of controversy, accused of spreading misinformation to obscure their responsibility for the devastation in Sudan. This article delves into recent statements made by the United Arab Emirates regarding the actions of the Sudanese military, shedding light on their attempts to mislead the international community amidst ongoing conflict and humanitarian crises.
UAE’s Response to Misinformation
The United Arab Emirates has firmly stated that the Sudanese Armed Forces continue to exploit any available platform to spread falsehoods against the UAE. This was articulated by Jamal Al-Musharakh, the UAE’s permanent representative to the United Nations and other international organizations in Geneva, during a special session of the Human Rights Council. He described this behavior as a desperate effort to mislead the international community and divert attention from the military’s role in the ongoing devastation in Sudan.
Failure to Address Humanitarian Crises
During the session, Al-Musharakh indicated that instead of focusing on ending the civil conflict they initiated, the Sudanese Armed Forces are engaged in misleading campaigns and disinformation efforts. He noted, “Rather than redirecting their effort to stop the civil war they ignited, the Sudanese Armed Forces are utilizing their resources for propaganda to prolong the conflict and hinder any real path to peace.”
Documented Violations and Humanitarian Stalemate
The UAE representative highlighted that reports from the United Nations have documented severe violations of international law by both the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces, including war crimes. Furthermore, he expressed disappointment that the Sudanese military has dismissed humanitarian ceasefire agreements, despite intensive efforts led by the United States, supported by the UAE, intended to prevent escalation in areas like Al-Fasher and allow humanitarian access.
Call for Accountability and Peace
Al-Musharakh reiterated the UAE’s commitment to supporting calls for an immediate and comprehensive ceasefire, urging both parties involved in the conflict to acknowledge their legal and humanitarian obligations. He emphasized the need to prioritize the interests of the Sudanese people, who are suffering the most from this senseless war. “Those who claim to build the glory of other nations should reflect on the destruction they have inflicted on their own people and direct their efforts toward rebuilding instead of exporting lies,” he stated.
In his closing remarks, Al-Musharakh underscored that “nations are built on peace, tolerance, and dialogue, not on massacres and destruction.” He pointed out that the leadership in Port Sudan, which seeks to gain international sympathy, is the same entity that historically caused bloodshed in Darfur two decades ago and violently seized power from the elected civilian government in October 2021.
As the situation evolves, the world watches closely, hoping for a resolution that honors the voice of the Sudanese people and seeks to rebuild a nation torn apart by conflict.
