Strengthening Geographic Safeguards for National Product Initiatives

Recently, the Ministry of Culture hosted an informative workshop focused on the national initiative for the protection of geographically indicated national products. This event, in collaboration with the Ministry of Economy and Tourism and the World Intellectual Property Organization, gathered various stakeholders supporting artisans and entrepreneurs. The workshop stands as a testament to the UAE’s commitment to safeguarding its cultural heritage and enhancing the economic value of its national products by officially registering them under recognized geographical indicators, thereby preserving their authenticity and providing legal protection while distinguishing them in both local and global markets.

Understanding Geographical Indications

A geographically indicated national product—commonly referred to as a geographical indication (GI)—is a crucial marker that signifies products with a reputation, quality, or unique characteristics predominantly due to their specific geographical origins. This system serves as an essential legal and economic tool to protect the original identity of local products and enhance their market value both domestically and internationally. Noteworthy examples in the UAE include products like Hatta honey, Al Dhafra dates, Ras Al Khaimah ceramics, and palm fronds.

Significance of the Initiative

According to Mubarak Al Nakhai, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Culture, “The national project for the protection of geographically indicated products represents a major milestone in the UAE’s efforts to establish a creative economy based on cultural identity.” He emphasized that this initiative not only aims to protect products but also to create a comprehensive framework that highlights the unique characteristics of each region within the country. Supporting artisans and producers through a solid legislative and executive framework is crucial for maximizing their intellectual property rights while enhancing their chances of accessing local and global markets.

Enhancing Economic Value

Dr. Abdul Rahman Hassan Al-Muaini, Assistant Undersecretary for Intellectual Property at the Ministry of Economy and Tourism, reiterated the ministry’s commitment to boosting the added value of national geographical indicators. The launch of the “geographically indicated national product” registration system has marked a pivotal development in the UAE’s intellectual property landscape. This establishment aims to form a complete national framework for protecting products linked to their geographic origin, safeguarding their authentic identity, and increasing awareness of national products, thereby enhancing their economic values and presence in regional and international markets.

Workshop Outcomes

The workshop explored the national project’s objectives and its role in raising awareness about the importance of protecting national products. It highlighted how these products can function as valuable cultural and economic assets that support national value chains, create new opportunities for producers and craftsmen, and broaden marketing and export horizons, positively impacting the country’s creative economy. Furthermore, it showcased best practices from around the globe regarding geographical indications, the mechanisms of product registration, and the legislation in place for their protection. Successful case studies from various countries were presented, illustrating how these experiences could be adapted to the UAE’s environment.
