Space 42 Joins Forces with Terrastar and Viasat for Global Communication Standards

In a groundbreaking collaboration, Canada’s Telesat Solutions has joined forces with UAE’s Space 42 and US-based Viasat to establish an open global standard for satellite infrastructure sharing. This initiative aims to enhance direct communication services for mobile devices, expanding coverage and fostering a more integrated space ecosystem among operators.

Memorandum of Understanding Signed

According to a report by Bloomberg, the companies signed a memorandum of understanding in Ottawa earlier this week. This landmark agreement focuses on developing open interoperability standards that will allow satellite operators to collaborate while retaining ownership and control over their assets.

Aiming for Global Coverage with National Sovereignty

The joint statement from the companies emphasised their commitment to achieving a global scope for services while ensuring national sovereignty over critical communication infrastructure. The partnership emerges at a time when there is a growing demand for direct satellite communication services, particularly in areas where terrestrial networks are ineffective.

A New Model for Space Operators

This agreement exemplifies a new model for cooperation among space communication operators, facilitating shared infrastructure and distribution of investment requirements, rather than building entirely separate systems. It also opens doors to provide broader services to users as they transition between well-connected regions and areas with limited coverage.

Telecommunications Expertise and Future Plans

Telesat, headquartered in Montreal and backed by Fortress Investment Group, is lending its expertise in satellite communication services to this collaboration. The company holds Canadian capacity rights on a geostationary satellite owned by EchoStar and is working with mobile network operators to enhance coverage in remote areas across Canada. Telesat also plans to launch a low earth orbit satellite constellation named “Kastor” to deliver connectivity to rural and underserved communities, with an estimated initial phase cost exceeding CAD 500 million (approximately USD 356 million).

Shared Vision and Commitment

CEO of Telesat, Jack LeDuc, highlighted that establishing a low earth orbit satellite system independently is neither sustainable nor economically viable. He noted that high satellite density is crucial for the success of this network type. The collaboration builds upon a previously announced partnership between Space 42 and Viasat, which in September launched a joint venture called Equatis, committing to a capital investment of up to USD 1 billion to develop shared infrastructure for direct device communication and mobile satellite services.

Objective and Future Deployments

Equatis aims to roll out its initial system by the end of 2029, providing a framework that telecom operators can utilise according to shared standards and frequency ranges. Karim Michael Sabbagh, Managing Director of Space 42, stated that Equatis aspires to construct a joint space infrastructure that allows operators to depend on common standards and frequency ranges, ensuring uninterrupted connectivity for mobile users as they move between network-served and underserved areas.

Context of Evolving Market Dynamics

These developments occur alongside the expansion of Starlink, a SpaceX subsidiary led by Elon Musk, into the satellite communications market, as it seeks to bolster direct communication services for mobile devices. In contrast, Equatis is banking on a model rooted in shared infrastructure among multiple operators, aiming to widen the range of services through collaboration rather than relying on a closed system.

Government Support for Satellite Communications

In a related effort, the Canadian government has pledged billions in contracts and loans to Telesat, which is also planning to establish its low earth orbit satellite system, as part of Canada’s broader strategy to enhance its capabilities within the satellite communications sector.
