Sheikha Shamma Inspires at Monaco Blue Economy Forum

In a significant event for environmental sustainability, Shamma bint Sultan bin Khalifa delivered the keynote address at the “Blue Economy and Finance Forum” in Monaco, highlighting the urgent need for actionable investment in climate initiatives and ocean preservation. The forum gathered distinguished participants from both public and private sectors in a collaborative effort to accelerate a sustainable blue economy. This initiative aims not only to address financial pathways but also to emphasize the moral responsibility societies have towards ocean health.

The Significance of the Blue Economy

At the forefront of the forum, Sheikha Shamma bint Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan, CEO of Frontier25 and president of several sustainability initiatives, articulated the critical nature of the blue economy. During her keynote address, she stated, “The sea is not just a resource but a responsibility. It is also a source of life on this planet and the basis for its sustainability.” Her words underscored the central role that ocean health plays in various economies, including the burgeoning blue economy model being discussed at the event.

Investment in Climate Action

Throughout her speech, Sheikha Shamma stressed the essential need for investment in climate-related projects. She explained, “We can make a real difference, and the essence of that lies in investment—in time, care, and capital to support ideas and innovations.” This call to action was a noteworthy highlight as she urged global leaders to recognize the trust bestowed upon them by previous generations in taking active steps to protect the environment for future ones. She emphasized that “climate change does not wait, and neither should our efforts to combat it.”

Protecting Our Oceans

Supporting her statements, His Serene Highness Albert II, Prince of Monaco, remarked on the diminishing barriers to ocean investment. He pointed out that the time for action is now, with any delay in decision-making regarding ocean protection becoming increasingly costly. “The consequences of procrastination in safeguarding our oceans are clear and documented, with future generations set to bear the brunt of these delays,” he noted, linking financial decisions to ecological outcomes.

Collaboration for Sustainability

In a striking move towards collaboration, Frontier25 and the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation signed a memorandum of understanding at the recent Ocean Innovators platform during Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week in January. This memorandum aims to bolster their cooperative efforts in sustainability, encompassing impactful investment, ocean innovation, and blue financing. Such initiatives are crucial, as they align with the UAE’s environmental conservation efforts, particularly highlighted by the Abu Dhabi Environment Agency’s ambitious goal to cultivate 4 million coral colonies by 2030, the largest coral reef restoration project in the world.
