In a significant stride towards enhancing public transport safety and efficiency, the Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority has integrated advanced artificial intelligence technology into its citywide bus and taxi services. This pioneering initiative incorporates a sophisticated system of smart cameras to monitor passenger behaviour, driver actions, and road conditions, thereby reinforcing overall safety and operational efficiency.
Comprehensive Monitoring System
The public transport buses are equipped with 10 smart cameras strategically placed both inside and outside the vehicles. These cameras are designed to observe the road, track passenger movement, and assess driver behaviour. In addition, taxis in Sharjah are fitted with 5 smart cameras, which ensure comprehensive coverage of the journey, including the interior of the vehicle.
Enhanced Safety Features
This innovative system boasts a range of advanced capabilities, including object and pedestrian detection, side encroachment monitoring, driver behaviour analysis, passenger counting, and immediate incident alerts. Such features significantly contribute to heightened safety levels and improved service quality.
Engineer Youssef Khamis Al Othmani, the Authority’s Head, reaffirmed the commitment to investing in cutting-edge technological solutions. This investment aims to create a sustainable and secure transport framework that aligns with global best practices. Furthermore, this initiative supports the goals of the “Year of the Family” by ensuring a safer and more reliable commuting environment, ultimately enhancing the quality of life for families in the region.
A Major Advancement in Transportation Oversight
Abdul Aziz Al Jarwan, Director of Transport Affairs at the Authority, described this technological upgrade as a vital step in improving operational oversight and response efficiency to incidents and observations. He emphasised that AI technologies have become integral to the enhancement of transport services, assuring a safer and more comfortable journey for both passengers and drivers. This initiative further cements the Authority’s dedication to providing smart services that meet community expectations.
