The University of Sharjah‘s Alumni Association has announced an extension for applications and nominations for participation in the inaugural “Group Wedding for Graduates of the University of Sharjah 2026” until the end of September. This initiative aims to provide an opportunity for a greater number of graduates to benefit from the community-oriented programme, with the group wedding ceremony scheduled to take place in December.
Emphasising Family Values and Community Support
This event aligns with the United Arab Emirates’ national vision, which has designated 2026 as the “Year of the Family.” It reflects Sharjah’s commitment to family welfare, underscoring the importance of family as the cornerstone of social stability and sustainable development within the Emirate.
University’s Commitment to Its Graduates
Professor Essam El-Din Ajami, the university’s director, highlighted that the initiative represents a natural extension of the university’s philosophy, which fosters ongoing relationships with its alumni beyond academic achievements. He noted the university’s responsibility towards graduates as they transition into establishing stable families, which in turn forms the foundation for community building.
Furthermore, Professor Ajami referred to the directives of His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah and University President, aiming to create a supportive environment for youth at all life stages. He reaffirmed the university’s role as an active partner in facilitating this significant life transition for its graduates, enhancing its status as a knowledge institution and a community-oriented entity.
Aiming to Ease Financial Burdens
Dr. Amal Al Ali, director of the Alumni Association, explained that the initiative is designed to directly support and encourage graduates in their wedding plans, alleviating financial burdens associated with weddings at the start of their shared lives. This approach aims to strengthen community solidarity and familial ties. The decision to extend the application deadline until the end of September was in response to the significant interest expressed by graduates, providing extra time for the completion of necessary documentation for participation.
Widespread Interest and Selection Process
Since the opening of registrations, the initiative has garnered considerable interest, with approximately 70 candidates, both nationals and residents, having applied so far. Following the closure of applications, the dedicated committees will commence the sorting, verification, and eligibility assessments to prepare for the announcement of the final list of eligible participants at the beginning of October. The application is open to all graduates, with no specific graduation year requirement, although applicants must submit their applications as either the graduate or the spouse. Additionally, this must be the applicant’s first marriage, and the marriage contract must be executed within the UAE, with the stipulation that the applicant has not previously participated in another group wedding.
Comprehensive Training and Benefits
The initiative is not limited to the celebratory aspects; it encompasses a comprehensive preparatory programme in collaboration with relevant official bodies. Couples will attend various training and advisory workshops covering financial planning for family budgeting, psychological and social compatibility, and principles of sustainable marital partnership. Participants will also receive support and benefits, including facilitation of the wedding ceremony, diverse gifts, and hotel vouchers to enhance the beginning of their family journey.
