Sharjah Promotes Initiatives to Cultivate Walking Culture

The Emirate of Sharjah is enhancing the culture of walking and launching initiatives to support this goal, highlighting its ongoing efforts to improve the quality of life and promote the health and well-being of its citizens and visitors. By establishing dedicated pathways and locations and organizing various events, the emirate is committed to encouraging all segments of society to adopt an active lifestyle centered around walking. These initiatives also emphasize environmental care and public health, marking a strategic step towards a more active and healthy community.

Establishing Specialized Walking Paths

The Emirate of Sharjah aims to create a number of dedicated walking paths in various areas, including residential complexes, parks, and gardens. Among the notable projects is “The Walk,” which represents a comprehensive model for a vehicle-free residential complex, and “Sharjah Sustainable City,” the first of its kind in the emirate, designed to encourage residents to walk instead of using cars. This effort enhances the quality of life and reduces harmful emissions.

Both “The Walk” and “Sharjah Sustainable City” feature designated paths for walking, running, and cycling, equipped to the highest global standards. They also include expansive green parks and gardens for nature lovers, contributing to the establishment of a walking culture as a healthy lifestyle.

The National Park is one of the prominent public parks providing dedicated walking paths. It features an open walkway equipped with top sports standards, allowing visitors to enjoy the surrounding greenery and plants. Visitors to this park can engage in various sports activities, promoting an active lifestyle within their community.

Moreover, there are numerous other paths distributed throughout the emirate, such as the circular walkway around Khalid Lake and the Khorfakkan Corniche. These locations are ideal for walking and are designed to create a supportive environment for sports and movement.

Distinctive Walking Initiatives and Events

The Emirate of Sharjah continuously launches initiatives and events aimed at promoting the culture of walking among residents throughout the year. Coinciding with various occasions, events such as “Sports Before Iftar,” organized by the Sharjah Sports Council during Ramadan, encourage participants to engage in brisk walking for an hour.

In a similar context, the Health Education Department in Sharjah launched the “Walk for Your Heart” initiative, which aims to motivate participants to walk an average of ten thousand steps daily. Additionally, the initiative titled “Lifestyle” invites everyone to “Walk Together Anytime, Anywhere,” highlighting the importance of walking as a means to maintain fitness and improve overall health.

A walking marathon was organized by the Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services in celebration of World Down Syndrome Day, focusing on empowering individuals with the syndrome during the event. Also, the Arthritis Patients Friends Association organizes an annual marathon that allocates a distance for walking, providing a platform that encourages all segments of society to participate.

Awareness Programs on the Importance of Walking

The Emirate of Sharjah is launching awareness initiatives aimed at educating individuals about the importance of walking for mental and physical health. In this context, the “Sharjah Morning” program dedicates educational segments to highlight the benefits of walking and its role in improving public health.

There are also several dialogue sessions and sports conferences that seek to promote various sports within the community, such as the dialogue session organized by the Statistics and Community Development Department last year, which addressed “The Relationship Between Sports and Quality of Life.”

The Emirate of Sharjah continues to strengthen the culture of walking among community members by establishing dedicated pathways and providing various suitable environments, in addition to organizing events that encourage physical activity. These efforts are complemented by awareness campaigns aimed at demonstrating the importance of walking and its positive impact on public health, reflecting the emirate’s commitment to achieving the well-being of its citizens and visitors.
