Sharjah Customs Launches Strategic Logistics Route to Oman

The Sharjah Ports, Customs, and Free Zones Authority has launched a comprehensive logistics corridor in collaboration with the Customs of Oman, aimed at enhancing connectivity and integration between the ports of Sharjah and Oman. This initiative focuses on developing an advanced logistics system that will significantly improve supply chain efficiency and sustainability in the region while facilitating smooth trade movement and diversifying logistics options for businesses.

Facilitating Trade Between Nations

This newly established logistics corridor encompasses several Omani ports, most notably the strategic Port of Sohar, which benefits from its geographic proximity to the UAE. Additionally, it includes the ports of Duqm and Salalah, providing a flexible network of routes that ensures a continuous flow of trade and meets market demands. The corridor aims to promote efficiency in regional supply chains by enhancing trade routes between the two nations.

Integration of Maritime and Land Transport

The logistics corridor is part of the integrated logistics framework of Sharjah, characterized by the synergy between its maritime infrastructure along both the eastern and western coasts. Prominent among these ports is Khor Fakkan, recognized as a major regional maritime hub that enhances container handling and cargo reception capabilities. The new corridor supports the integration of sea and land transportation, offering comprehensive logistics pathways that expand market access without replacing existing maritime routes.

Operational Enhancements for Streamlined Processes

The corridor operates through various land access points in Sharjah, primarily the Khatmat Malaha border crossing in Kalba and the Al Madam crossing. This enhances the logistics connection between UAE ports and commercial centers in Oman, ensuring smooth shipment movements across borders. The official operational launch of the corridor took place on May 14, following the completion of all necessary technical and coordination requirements among the involved parties. This initiative witnessed the dispatch of the first shipments from Khalid Port in Sharjah to Sohar Port, passing through the Khatmat Malaha border, thereby affirming the operational readiness of the logistics system and showcasing the efficient integration of land and maritime routes.

Comprehensive Customs and Operational Facilitation

The logistics corridor offers a complete package of operational and customs facilitation through coordinated efforts between Sharjah customs and Omani customs authorities, ensuring a seamless and integrated experience for stakeholders. Notably, customs clearance procedures can be completed directly at border points in Sharjah, particularly at the Khatmat Malaha and Al Madam crossings, minimizing the need for additional transportation stages. This significantly reduces processing times, accelerates cargo release, lowers land transport costs, and enhances the overall flow of goods.

The corridor also leverages an advanced protocol that includes expedited shipping routes, pre-processing of data, and direct transport under customs supervision, alongside data sharing and joint coordination between the two nations. This ensures swift processing and heightened reliability, enhancing operational efficiency at every stage.

By providing a flexible logistics route backed by the geographical proximity of Sharjah’s gateways and Oman’s ports, particularly Sohar, the corridor aims to shorten transit times, augment operational efficiency, and promote supply chain resilience under varying conditions. It supports import, export, and re-export activities, enabling local manufacturers, trading companies, and enterprises in free zones to access regional and global markets with flexible logistics solutions.

The corridor significantly enhances the flow of goods arriving from Sohar Port and other Omani ports to local markets in the UAE via Sharjah’s land gateways. This diversification of supply chains bolsters supply flexibility and offers the commercial sector more efficient options. The establishment of a joint task force between the two sides facilitates operational coordination and the development of data interchange mechanisms, enhancing customs efficiency and ensuring high levels of reliability while adhering to global standards in safety, security, and risk management.

The Sharjah Ports, Customs, and Free Zones Authority has emphasized that the launch of this initiative reflects the deep economic ties between the UAE and Oman. It signifies a remarkable level of strategic integration between both nations, contributing to the development of a comprehensive logistics framework that supports continuous trade flow with high efficiency.

Furthermore, this corridor is positioned as a significant advancement towards establishing Sharjah as a leading regional center for logistics services. By providing flexible options that support trade movement, it enables businesses to adapt to operational changes. Ultimately, the logistics corridor represents a strategic step forward in developing an integrated transportation system that harmonizes various transport modes. There are future plans to include air freight services, which will further enhance the resilience and sustainability of supply chains, thereby solidifying Sharjah’s status as a leading logistics hub in the region.
