Sharjah 24:
The 12th Sharjah Calligraphy Forum, themed “Mizan,” welcomed a delegation from the Al-Masar Centre for Development and Empowerment, part of the Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services, on Tuesday, 27th October 2026. The visit took place at 10:30 am in the heart of Sharjah, specifically at the Calligraphy Square, as part of the forum’s broader cultural and artistic activities organised by the Cultural Affairs Department of the Sharjah Culture Department.
Fostering Community Participation
This initiative reflects the Department of Culture’s commitment to enhancing community engagement and ensuring that people with disabilities have the opportunity to participate in cultural and artistic events. Such activities are designed to help them discover and develop their creative talents, fostering their integration into society.
A Welcoming Group
The visiting delegation comprised 30 students, accompanied by six supervisors, including social specialists Ryouf Al-Lughani and Nourah Al-Quraishi, as well as psychologist Dr. Amir Saudi.
An Enriching Experience
The visit included an introductory tour of the exhibitions at the Sharjah Calligraphy Forum, where the students explored a variety of artistic and calligraphic works. They also participated in two hands-on workshops focused on Arabic calligraphy and ornamentation, offering them a direct creative experience.
Workshops Highlighting Arabic Artistry
During the first workshop, led by calligrapher Hossam Ahmed Abdul Wahab, the students learned about the aesthetics of Arabic letters and techniques for shaping them according to their abilities and skills. This session concentrated on the Diwani script, employing traditional Arabic calligraphy pens.
The second workshop introduced the students to the art of creating decorative motifs using watercolours, particularly golden hues, known for their application in mosque architecture and the gilding of Qurans. This session was delivered by calligrapher Musab Al-Duri, a teacher of Islamic ornamentation at the Sharjah Calligraphy Centre.
Encouraging Creativity and Inclusivity
This initiative aims to provide a stimulating cultural and artistic environment that nurtures the students’ creativity and allows them to express their talents. Moreover, it promotes their interaction with authentic Arabic art forms while embedding values of inclusivity and equal access to cultural activities.
This visit underscores the Culture Department’s dedication to expanding participation in its events and establishing strong connections with community organisations. It enhances the role of culture and the arts in empowering various segments of society and embodies the Sharjah Calligraphy Forum’s mission to spread the beauty of Arabic calligraphy and ornamentation, ensuring it remains accessible to all.
