Sharjah: A Child’s Vision of Tomorrow Awaits

The city of Sharjah has taken significant strides in urban planning with a compassionate focus on children, earning international recognition from the World Health Organization (WHO) for its innovative approach. A recent study titled “Towards Healthy and Child-Friendly Public Spaces in Sharjah” documents the emirate’s efforts from 2017 to 2023, highlighting the collaboration between the Sharjah Health Authority, represented by the Sharjah Child-Friendly Office, the WHO, and UN-Habitat. This initiative positions Sharjah as a potential model for other cities seeking to integrate child-centric urban planning.

A Vision Rooted in Humanity

This progressive agenda stems from a longstanding vision championed by His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, a member of the Supreme Council and the Ruler of Sharjah. He has consistently placed the well-being of individuals, families, and children at the core of development initiatives, ensuring that quality of life is integral to the city’s evolution. In parallel, Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher bint Muhammad Al Qasimi, Chairperson of the Sharjah Family and Community Council, has played a prominent role in advocating for children’s and families’ issues, fostering initiatives that create safer and more inclusive environments for children, thereby affirming their status as vital contributors to society and the architects of the future.

Children as Co-Designers of Their Environments

What sets Sharjah’s experience apart is its commitment to involving children not just as users of public spaces but as essential participants in their design and development. Engagement of children and youth in urban planning, alongside the provision of safe play areas, green spaces, and climate-responsive solutions, reflects a comprehensive vision that prioritises the health and well-being of young citizens. These elements collectively signify a paradigm shift where urban spaces are designed through the lens of childhood needs.

Planning Guidelines and Future Commitments

The adoption of child-friendly urban planning guidelines marks a pivotal transition in Sharjah’s strategy, moving beyond isolated initiatives to a more systemic approach. This integration ensures that children’s needs are front and centre in the design of both public spaces and the future of the city. Importantly, the benefits of such urban planning extend beyond children; a city designed with children’s safety and comfort in mind often proves to be more accommodating for families, the elderly, and the broader community.

A Global Dialogue on Urban Futures

WHO’s recognition of Sharjah’s initiative transcends local achievement; it positions the emirate within a global dialogue regarding the future of urban living. A city that prioritises children inherently prioritises human wellbeing, demonstrating an ethos that posits investing in children is tantamount to investing in humanity as a whole. As Sharjah continues to embrace this vision, the underlying message is clear: creating sustainable, healthy futures begins with a commitment to nurturing and including the voices of our youngest citizens.
