Transforming Arab School Theater with a Fresh Perspective

In a significant move celebrating a decade since the launch of the strategy for developing school theater in the Arab world, the الهيئة العربية للمسرح is convening a meeting of school theater experts from various Arab nations. This initiative aims to shape the vision for the next ten years, focusing on the period from 2026 to 2035, and updating its priorities to align with contemporary educational and technological advancements. A crucial aspect of this effort is to integrate the outcomes with national development plans across Arab countries, underscoring the الهيئة العربية للمسرح’s commitment to modernizing the Arab school theater landscape.

Celebrating a Decade of Achievements

Since its inception in 2015, the strategy initiated by the الهيئة العربية للمسرح has marked numerous milestones. One of the most noteworthy accomplishments is the inclusion of school theater as a priority for Arab ministries of education. This has resulted in comprehensive training for approximately 20,000 educators, greatly enhancing the delivery of theatrical education. The introduction of a theater curriculum across all grades in Emirati schools, coupled with the recruitment of numerous specialists to teach and promote theater, has positioned school theater as a vital component of the educational and cultural landscape in the Arab world.

Pioneering Vision for the Future

Ismail Abdullah, the Secretary-General of الهيئة العربية للمسرح, emphasized that this meeting reflects the directives of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al-Qasimi, a member of the Supreme Council and ruler of Sharjah. Abdullah remarked, “School theater in the Arab world has entered a new phase of interest and development, fueled by this noble vision, emphasizing the importance of theater in human development and community building.” The strong support from leadership highlights a commitment to enhancing the role of theater in shaping future generations.

Updating the Curriculum for Arabic Identity

Abdullah expressed pride in the development of an authentic Arabic theater curriculum specifically for the Emirati educational system. The content was crafted by Arab experts, ensuring a balance between cultural identity and openness to other cultures. This strategic update aims to foster an enriched educational experience while celebrating local heritage. The upcoming meeting is seen as a crucial checkpoint to evaluate and refresh the goals of the strategy, paving the way for future growth.

Call for Continuous Collaboration

As part of the ongoing efforts, the الهيئة العربية للمسرح is urging Arab ministries and educational institutions to maintain their partnership and collaboration. Abdullah noted that reinforcing the significance of theater is essential in nurturing a generation that is culturally aware and knowledgeable. Such cooperation is expected to play a vital role in contributing to sustainable development across the region. The future of Arab school theater looks promising, with renewed strategies that aim to inspire creativity and critical thinking among students.
