Record-Breaking Participation at Dubai Cycling Challenge’s 10th Edition

In a vibrant demonstration of community spirit and athletic enthusiasm, 41,836 cycling enthusiasts took to the streets of Sheikh Zayed Road and Downtown Dubai yesterday for the “Dubai Cycling Challenge.” This event, supported by “DP World,” is the largest community cycling event in the region and marks the launch of the tenth edition of the “Dubai Fitness Challenge,” bringing together participants of all ages and fitness levels in a celebration of family and health.

Community Spirit and Family Values

The event showcased the essence of family unity, as families comprising children, parents, and grandparents cycled together, embodying the values of the Year of the Family in the UAE. This initiative transformed the act of exercising into a shared family experience, fostering connections across generations while promoting healthy habits and making physical activity a core part of daily life.

Supporting the Vision of a Healthy Dubai

The event was organised by Dubai’s Department of Economy and Tourism and the Dubai Sports Council, in line with the vision of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, to make Dubai one of the most active cities in the world. This year’s theme, “Ready for the 30×30 Challenge?” encourages each individual to choose an activity they enjoy and engage in it for 30 minutes every day for 30 days.

Saeed Hareb, Secretary-General of the Dubai Sports Council, expressed joy at seeing families riding together. “It’s heartening to see children, parents, and grandparents cycling together in this Year of the Family,” said Hareb. “The participation of 41,836 cyclists in the tenth edition of the Dubai Fitness Challenge offers a remarkable start. The sight of thousands of residents and visitors cycling along Sheikh Zayed Road and Downtown Dubai, near iconic landmarks, underscores the community’s love for sports and commitment to physical activity.” He added that the Dubai Cycling Challenge has become a highly anticipated community sporting event, evident from the impressive turnout and enthusiasm displayed by participants.

A Decade of Promoting an Active Lifestyle

Ahmed Al Khaja, Executive Director of the Dubai Festivals and Retail Establishment, also praised the event. “Today, we witness the culmination of ten years of work to encourage people to engage in sports while enjoying communal activities. The gathering of thousands on Sheikh Zayed Road illustrates how far the Dubai Fitness Challenge has come and how seamlessly sports have intertwined with daily life, creating opportunities for social interaction and relationship building.” He noted that the 30×30 initiative has become integral to life in Dubai, thanks to the dedication of participants, which was once again evident during the event.

Family-Friendly Routes and Inclusions

The event featured two distinct cycling routes: a family-friendly path stretching four kilometres through Downtown Dubai along Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Boulevard, offering views of the Burj Khalifa and Dubai Opera; and a more challenging 12-kilometre route along Sheikh Zayed Road, allowing experienced cyclists to ride past the Museum of the Future and Dubai Water Canal, with stunning cityscape vistas.

Organisers also catered to inclusivity with entry support for 53 individuals of determination, enabling them to participate using hand-cycles, tandem bikes, and adaptive bicycles tailored to their needs. This allowed everyone to join the initiative and continue their journey towards completing the 30×30 challenge.

Entertainment and Awards

Accompanying the cycling routes were entertainment programmes. On the family route, characters like Spider-Man and Pokémon figures greeted participants, while musicians performed lively soundtracks to energise the cyclists. At the start of the 12-kilometre route, host Katie Overy encouraged participants with engaging segments. The musical lineup featured acts such as “Rum G” and “Simeo,” who are also slated to perform at the “Untold Dubai” festival.

Outside the cycling paths, festivities included drum performances, a Filipino musical showcase, and exciting acts from the “Mirror Mabor” Bhangra drum ensemble, along with a performance by the “Emirates All Stars” cheerleading team. Families were invited to embellish their bicycles and don creative costumes for a chance to win one of four awards covering categories such as “Best Bike,” “Most Innovative Idea,” “Best Family Costume,” and “Best Group Costume.”

Following the Dubai Cycling Challenge, Hatta Dam will host participants for the “Dubai Rowing Challenge,” on November 7 and 8, with activities spread over two days.
