For the First Time: Export of Selenium-Rich “Shisha” Watermelon from China‘s Ningxia to the United Arab Emirates
In a significant agricultural achievement, the city of Chongyi in the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region of northwest China has completed the export procedures for the first batch of selenium-rich “Shisha” watermelon to the United Arab Emirates. This step marks a milestone in the history of exporting this unique type of watermelon, known for its sweet taste and juicy texture, cultivated in selenium-rich soil. The export of “Shisha” watermelon presents an opportunity to expand agricultural markets and raise awareness of its health benefits in the Middle East.
Steps for Exporting “Shisha” Watermelon
The local authorities in Chongyi have completed the necessary customs procedures to export 25 tons of “Shisha” watermelon, a variety known for its small seeds and unique flavor. According to Luo Huiyuan, head of the e-commerce department in the city’s commerce administration, fertile lands have been carefully selected since January for the cultivation of this watermelon. Luo explained that the city has established strict standards for every stage of the process, from planting to harvesting, to ensure the production of high-quality “Shisha” watermelon.
Strong Partnership Agreements
As part of its expansion efforts, Chongyi has signed a framework agreement with the UAE’s “Wenchao” Group to transport 400 tons of “Shisha” watermelon. The transportation will occur overland to Shenzhen Port, followed by maritime shipping to the UAE. The shipping process is scheduled to utilize a cold chain, ensuring that each batch arrives within approximately 15 days.
Unique Characteristics of “Shisha” Watermelon
“Shisha” watermelon only grows in the area surrounding Xiangsha, thanks to the calcareous soil rich in gravel and the dry climate. This type of watermelon is known for its large size and rich juice, making it a favorite among fruit lovers. In 2018, “Shisha” watermelon received geographical indication registration, enhancing its status as a distinctive product both locally and internationally.
New Opportunities and Resources
The city of Chongyi aims to boost the export of “Shisha” watermelon and increase the overall volume of exports, including apples and other agricultural products. With the upcoming seventh China-Arab States Expo, the city anticipates that this event will provide greater opportunities for trade and economic cooperation with Arab countries. Luo expressed enthusiasm for these initiatives, highlighting the importance of building a strong foundation for exporting fruits and vegetables from western China to the world.
