Starting from September 1, 2025, Abu Dhabi will implement new traffic toll adjustments aimed at improving traffic flow and alleviating congestion during peak hours. The Integrated Transport Center (ITC) of the Department of Municipalities and Transport has announced these changes as part of its ongoing commitment to enhance urban mobility in the capital. This article will explore the specifics of these adjustments and what they mean for drivers in Abu Dhabi.
Details of the New Traffic Toll Adjustments
According to the ITC, the revised traffic toll regulations will introduce alterations to the evening toll hours, now set from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM. The morning hours remain unchanged, continuing from 7:00 AM to 9:00 AM, Monday through Saturday. Notably, there will be no toll charges on Sundays and official holidays, creating more flexibility for commuters during these times.
Changes in Maximum Toll Limits
One of the significant modifications in the updated traffic toll regime is the removal of the daily and monthly maximum caps currently applied to individual vehicles. Previously, drivers faced a maximum daily toll of 16 dirhams and monthly limits of 200, 150, and 100 dirhams, depending on the type of vehicle. With the new measures, these caps will be eliminated, allowing for potentially higher toll charges based on usage.
Toll Costs and Exemptions Remain in Place
The established toll of 4 dirhams for each crossing at toll gates in Abu Dhabi will continue to apply under the new regulations. Importantly, the current exemption policies will also remain in effect, offering relief to eligible groups such as persons with disabilities, low-income families, senior citizens, and retirees. This ensures that the impacts of the toll changes are equitably distributed among residents.
Management and Implementation
The company “Q Mobility,” a subsidiary of the Abu Dhabi Holding Company (ADQ), will oversee the management and operation of the “Darb” toll system in Abu Dhabi. They will facilitate the implementation of these new traffic toll adjustments in coordination with relevant authorities, ensuring a smooth transition for all motorists.
The adjustments to the traffic tolls in Abu Dhabi reflect a strategic approach to urban mobility, aiming to enhance the overall transportation experience for the community. As drivers adapt to these changes beginning September 1, 2025, the hope is to foster a more efficient traffic environment through well-structured and thoughtfully administered toll regulations.
