This impressive venue is set to enrich the cultural landscape with its state-of-the-art facilities dedicated to music and performing arts, showcasing both international talent and local creativity.

Overview of “Dar Al Funoon Abu Dhabi”

His Highness Sheikh Khalid bin Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Chairman of the Executive Council of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, attended the launch of the “Dar Al Funoon Abu Dhabi” project, located near the cultural district of Saadiyat. Upon its expected opening in 2030, the venue will emerge as one of the largest specialized institutions for music and performing arts in the region, equipped with the latest global theatrical and production technologies. The center will host performances and artistic activities year-round.

The project includes a multipurpose main hall with a seating capacity of over 2,000, an open amphitheater that can accommodate 3,500 attendees, and a theatrical studio designed for 400 guests. Additionally, there will be a jazz club with a 250-seat capacity, culminating in a total seating capacity exceeding 6,000 across its various artistic facilities, ensuring it attracts top-tier international artistic productions and offers exceptional cultural experiences for local, regional, and international audiences.

Architectural Vision and Inspirational Design

During the event, His Highness reviewed the primary plans for “Dar Al Funoon Abu Dhabi” and received a detailed briefing on the architectural vision and implementation phases of the project, which include advanced facilities designed to meet the highest global standards for hosting prominent international artistic productions. The project, commissioned by the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, has been designed by the late renowned architect Frank Gehry, a pioneer of contemporary architecture, who has already left his mark on the emirate’s cultural landscape with the forthcoming Guggenheim Abu Dhabi museum.

“Dar Al Funoon Abu Dhabi” reflects a visionary architectural inspiration drawn from music and performing arts, featuring a transparent facade that embodies Abu Dhabi’s openness to creativity and cultural exchange. This addition enhances the emirate’s already impressive array of global cultural landmarks.

Impact on Culture and Community Engagement

In his remarks, Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, emphasized that “Dar Al Funoon Abu Dhabi” signifies a long-term investment in artistic expression, showcasing a holistic approach to cultural development powered by community values and global outreach. He stated, “This is a well-considered investment in our cultural ecosystem’s future, clearly reflecting our ambitions. “Dar Al Funoon Abu Dhabi” will serve as a permanent home for high-caliber performances, connecting a roster of artists and creative talents from the UAE, region, and around the world.

This facility aims to enhance Abu Dhabi’s cultural scene by attracting and developing significant global art productions, providing a premier platform to showcase Emirati arts and national identity, further reinforcing the country’s presence on the international cultural map.

Boosting Economic Growth through Creativity

“Dar Al Funoon Abu Dhabi” also represents a key contributor to the creative economy by cultivating cultural and creative industries, promoting cultural tourism, and attracting investment and talent within the sector. This aligns with the emirate’s objectives to diversify its economy and boost the contribution of knowledge-based and creative sectors to sustainable development.

The announcement of the “Dar Al Funoon Abu Dhabi” project continues the ongoing development trajectory witnessed on Saadiyat Island, which includes the Louvre Abu Dhabi, the Zayed National Museum, the Abu Dhabi Natural History Museum, and the upcoming Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, all of which highlight Abu Dhabi’s vision of establishing a comprehensive cultural ecosystem that positions the emirate as a global hub for culture, arts, and knowledge.

Ultimately, “Dar Al Funoon Abu Dhabi” symbolizes the emirate’s commitment to continuing its cultural investments as a cornerstone of overall development, driving innovation and creativity while enhancing the emirate’s and the United Arab Emirates’ standings on the global cultural and creative landscape.
