Last Chance: Submit Your Nomination for Sharjah’s ‘Targuman’ by September 15

The Sharjah Book Authority has announced that it is continuing to accept nominations for the “Tarjuman Award” for the year 2026 until 15 September. This prestigious award, regarded as one of the highest honours in the field of translation globally, allocates a substantial prize of 1.4 million dirhams for the winners. The award-winning work will be revealed during the opening ceremony of the 45th Sharjah International Book Fair.

Eligibility and Focus of the Award

The award welcomes Arabic works that have seen their first printed editions translated into any language from 2016 to 2026. It encompasses fields of thought, culture, and creativity that are grounded in or inspired by Arab and Islamic civilisations. The aim of the award is to enhance the circulation of Arabic literature in foreign publishing markets and to encourage translations of Arabic works into new languages. Notably, this award is the first of its kind in the world to simultaneously honour both foreign translations and the original Arabic works from which they are derived.

Expanding the Reach of Arabic Literature

Ahmad bin Rakkad Al Ameri, the CEO of the Sharjah Book Authority, stated, “The Tarjuman Award has given Arabic literature a significant role in the relationship between Arab culture and the wider world; a work that is translated into a new language expands its readership and enters into new contexts—from research and critique to education—thereby contributing more effectively to cultural discussions beyond its linguistic borders. Consequently, the award evaluates the value of the translated work based on two complementary elements: the importance of the original Arabic book and its intellectual and creative worth, as well as the quality of the translation in conveying its ideas.”

He added, “The Tarjuman Award reinforces a practical aspect of His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi’s vision in enhancing the contribution of Arab knowledge to global intellectual movements. Under the guidance of Her Highness Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairperson of the Sharjah Book Authority, the initiative highlights a thorough understanding of the pathway that books follow to enter new markets—from protecting copyright to ensuring high-quality translations, enabling Arab publishers to present works to a global audience in a way that meets the expectations of new markets and readers.”

Recognition for All Contributors

The distribution of the award’s value reflects a practical appreciation for all parties involved. The foreign publisher receiving the award is entitled to 910,000 dirhams, representing about 65% of the total prize. The Arab publisher holding the primary publication rights for the Arabic edition will receive 390,000 dirhams, equivalent to 27.8%, while the translator of the winning work will earn 100,000 dirhams.
