Joyful Moments at the Finish Line: Kids Create Rainy Race Tales

Under the drumming of rain at the picturesque Al Hafiya Lake in Wadi Al Helo, excitement soared among participants during the third round of the Emirates Village Races this weekend. Children dashed towards the finish line, their parents beaming with pride, as thunder mingled with the cheers of the crowd, creating a uniquely vibrant atmosphere that harmonised sport, nature, and community spirit in Sharjah.

Approximately 1,000 competitors took part in this event, reflecting a growing interest in races that cater to various age groups, allowing families and individuals to engage in a fun and community-focused sporting experience.

Organised by the UAE Balanced Development Council, the Emirates Village Running Series is a standout initiative combining athleticism and social engagement in the UAE.

The journey commenced on the bus to Wadi Al Helo, filled with anticipation about the event’s details. Upon arrival at the lake, scenes unfolded with participants prepping for the races, photographers capturing the moments, and families seeking the best vantage points to cheer on their children, against a backdrop of stunning mountains that complemented the physical activities.

The mountainous natural trails in Wadi Al Helo added a distinctive charm to the running events, blending sport with the beauty of the outdoors. The inclusion of diverse age groups fostered connections among children, youth, and adults, promoting physical activity and healthy living within a spirit of positive competition and communal involvement.

One participant highlighted the distinct features of the Emirates Village Races, noting the excellent organisation and exhilarating atmosphere that inspire participants to commit to the entire series. He mentioned completing three events thus far, praising the races held in various locations across the country, which uniquely cater to all age groups.

Young athlete Fatima participated in the children’s race, covering a distance of 1.5 kilometres, securing the first place. Fuelled by her love for running, which she began pursuing at age seven, she expressed her desire to continue competing and achieving higher ranks. She also thanked her family for their unwavering support and encouragement.

Another young runner, Meetha Nasser, joined the Emirates Village Race, drawn by her passion for running, which she has cultivated as a hobby for the past year. Her eagerness to participate stemmed from having missed the second round of the series, reinforcing her commitment to join subsequent events, motivated by her family’s constant support.

The medals awarded to the winners, designed in the shape of the houbara bird, added a distinctive touch, making them memorable tokens associated with the event’s atmosphere.

Among the participants was Abdullah Al Zaabi and his children, who provided a glimpse of local agricultural production. Abdullah commented, “I have seven farms where I cultivate a variety of crops,” highlighting their presence at the Al Jubail market in Kalba, which connects visitors with local produce. This initiative reflects another facet of the community-focused gathering, promoting agricultural ventures, local products, and community interaction alongside the sporting and entertainment activities.

As winners were announced, joy enveloped the atmosphere, with smiles brightening the faces of children celebrating their achievements. Parents beamed with pride at their children’s success. Amid cheers and applause, the spirit of competition prevailed, with some participants continuing to run with determination and enthusiasm, even after the official conclusion of their races.

More than Just a Race

At Al Hafiya Lake in Wadi Al Helo, the day transcended mere racing, evolving into a comprehensive experience that intertwined sport, recreation, small enterprises, and community engagement. The excitement began from the moment participants boarded the bus and persisted through every race and raindrop, highlighting the importance of sports for all ages, the natural beauty of the mountainous Wadi Al Helo, and the role of community initiatives in supporting local products and fostering connections among community members.
