In celebration of Emirati Women’s Day, the Zayed National Museum has launched the “Women of the Nation” tour, which kicked off on 1st August and will run until 26th September. This initiative aims to highlight the significant achievements and contributions of women in shaping Emirati society through the ages.
Exploring the Journey of Emirati Women
The “Women of the Nation” tour invites visitors to embark on a journey through five of the museum’s permanent exhibition halls: “Our Beginnings,” “To Our Ancestors,” “Within Our Ties,” “At Our Shores,” and “From Our Roots.” This experience reveals the integral role women have played in the region’s history, from ancient times to the present, showcasing their leadership, support for communities, preservation of cultural heritage, and the passing down of knowledge and experiences through generations.
Influential Figures and Historical Context
During the tour, guests will discover the impactful legacy of Sheikha Salama bint Butti Al Qubaisi, whose wisdom and values significantly shaped the upbringing of her son, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founder of the United Arab Emirates. The tour also shines a light on the remarkable efforts of Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, known as the “Mother of the Nation,” and her contributions to women’s empowerment, family support, and advancing education and community development in the UAE.
Historical Significance and Everyday Contributions
The exhibition highlights historical evidence that reflects the elevated status of women in the region throughout history, including the story of a woman buried on Marwah Island dating back eight thousand years, as well as the presence of female rulers evidenced by coins from the period between 300 BC and 100 AD. Alongside these notable figures, the tour also acknowledges the everyday contributions of women in coastal and inland communities, from supporting the pearl economy to weaving traditional homes, preparing food and medicine, and showcasing rich Emirati cultural traditions.
