Jordan and UAE Railway Project Revolutionizes Mineral Exports

The Jordanian-Emirati railway project is emerging as a pivotal initiative in cross-border shipping, fundamentally reshaping the landscape for mineral exports. By establishing a strategic transportation network, this venture aims to enhance trade efficiency and reduce reliance on maritime routes amidst ongoing regional disruptions.

Strategic Significance of the Project

The Jordanian-Emirati railway initiative underscores a growing focus on developing overland shipping as a strategic foundation for regional trade among Arab nations. On April 15, 2026, Jordan and the UAE signed an agreement for this groundbreaking project, which represents one of the largest joint investment schemes between the two countries. The project’s importance extends beyond local borders, positioning Jordan as a potential transit hub connecting the Gulf, the Levant, and the Mediterranean Sea. This new corridor opens up wider opportunities for Arab economic integration and helps diversify trade routes during times of crisis.

Experts consulted by the specialized energy platform Power reported that the project marks a critical juncture in the development of Jordan’s transport sector. Enhanced logistics will result in reduced costs and improved cargo transport efficiency, forging a direct link between production sites and ports, ultimately benefiting the competitiveness of national exports, particularly within the mining sector.

Infrastructure and Investment

The “Aqaba Port Railway” project is characterized by a joint investment estimated at about $2.3 billion, developed equally between Jordan and the UAE. Key stakeholders include the Jordan Phosphate Mines Company, Arab Potash Company, Jordan’s Social Security Investment Fund, and Emirati representation through Al-Imad Holding and an investment platform linked to the Abu Dhabi government.

This major infrastructure initiative aims to establish a 360-kilometer railway network connecting phosphate and potash mines directly to the industrial port in Aqaba. Plans indicate that the line could transport approximately 16 million tons annually, including a substantial 13 million tons of phosphate and 2.6 million tons of potash. This not only bolsters export capabilities but also significantly enhances the competitiveness of Jordan’s mining sector in global markets.

A New Era of Logistics

Former Minister of Transport, Dr. Lina Shbib, emphasized that the Jordanian-Emirati railway project represents an essential strategic step for Arab collaboration. It reallocates freight movement from maritime to a more integrated overland route, effectively linking Jordan with vital Gulf hubs and diminishing reliance on open sea routes during times of crisis.

Shbib pointed out that the initiative not only connects the Levant with Gulf countries but also provides operational alternatives during geopolitical tensions, thereby diversifying supply chains and mitigating risks associated with singular maritime routes for regional traders. The project symbolizes a commitment to improving logistical integration between Arab nations, supporting comprehensive planning, data sharing, and the standardization of technical and sectoral benchmarks across the region.

Economic Impact and Future Prospects

Economic expert Wajdi Makhamra described the Jordanian-Emirati railway project as a strategic Arab response to the challenges facing maritime shipping, albeit indirectly and over the long term. It establishes the groundwork for a national rail network in Jordan that could expand regionally, serving as a viable alternative to maritime logistics.

He highlighted that repeated disruptions in shipping through strategic chokepoints such as the Strait of Hormuz could enhance the project’s role as a diversification tool, presenting a practical model for overland connections to partially substitute maritime trade routes, especially for intra-Arab commerce.

The project significantly reduces the total reliance on maritime shipping for certain commercial corridors in the Arab world, reinforcing economic integration through a Gulf-Jordan partnership. Moreover, it is anticipated to bolster the flexibility of Arab supply chains by transforming Aqaba into a regional logistics hub, with future connectivity options to neighboring Arab states and Mediterranean ports, thereby extending trade routes toward European markets.

Additionally, transporting minerals such as phosphate and potash via rail is expected to achieve cost savings of between 30% and 50% compared to conventional trucking, enhancing the competitiveness of Jordanian exports on both Arab and global stages. The benefits of the railway project are projected to include lower diesel consumption, reduced emissions, and less environmental degradation, while also fostering repeatable partnerships with the private sector, creating thousands of jobs, boosting exports, and stimulating investment opportunities, reinforcing Aqaba’s status as a regional center with new avenues for growth in southern Jordan.

As the project moves forward, it promises to transform not only the transportation landscape but also the broader economic framework for Jordan, positioning the nation at the forefront of regional trade and logistics.
