In a recent discussion at the Mohammed bin Rashid Leaders Forum, Eisa Kazim, Chairman of DP World, highlighted how Dubai’s foresight and proactive approach have reshaped it into a leading global trade hub. He stated that Dubai has consistently anticipated future trade needs, exemplifying a sustainable model of trade infrastructure that is grounded in the belief that the future must be created, not awaited.
A Vision for Global Trade
Kazim pointed out that Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s vision has propelled Dubai Ports into unprecedented global realms, transforming the city from merely a regional port into a comprehensive global trade network. This evolution has been complemented by an extensive operational expansion of DP World, which now encompasses over 80 ports across six continents and employs more than 125,000 staff members. The organisation currently manages approximately 10% of global container trade.
Logistical Excellence
With DP World, the operational scope has evolved beyond just managing ports. Kazim elaborated that Dubai is now at the core of global trade flow, offering a complete system of logistics services, economic zones, and trade infrastructure. He stressed that the group is embarking on a new strategic transformation aimed at enhancing the operational efficiency of this global network, ensuring that ports, logistics services, and internal infrastructure operate as a cohesive unit to deliver increased value to stakeholders and simplify trade processes.
Building for the Future
Looking ahead, Kazim indicated that the group’s strategy is not just about reacting to global changes but is focused on foreseeing and shaping these dynamics. This approach aligns with Dubai’s overarching vision to enhance supply chain resilience, connect global markets, and continue developing trade infrastructure that meets future demands.
Foundations of Dubai’s Economic Prosperity
He reflected on the historical foundations of DP World, which have been instrumental in establishing Dubai as a global trade and logistics leader. Tracing back over a century, Kazim recounted the 1901 decision by Sheikh Maktoum bin Hashar Al Maktoum to exempt traders from customs duties, which marked Dubai as a free port attracting merchants at a time when regional ports imposed high tariffs and restrictions.
Moreover, he identified three fundamental principles that have underpinned Dubai’s economic rise: the promotion of economic freedom and free market regulations to align with modern economic trends; prioritising business communities by supporting their initiatives through a conducive legislative and regulatory environment; and the continued commitment of Dubai’s government to develop essential infrastructure that facilitates smooth trade movement and enhances import and re-export activities.
Transformational Projects
Kazim highlighted significant initiatives reflecting these principles, such as the deepening of Dubai Creek in the 1950s to accommodate larger vessels, thereby fostering trade growth. As oil discoveries in the 1960s accelerated commercial expansion and increased reliance on Dubai’s logistics services, the government recognised the need for modern infrastructure, leading to the establishment of Port Rashid in 1972, which catered to larger ships and improved supply chains.
He noted that the visionary leadership of Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum culminated in the launching of Jebel Ali Port in 1979, which became the world’s largest man-made port and transformed the trade landscape. This ambitious vision was complemented by the establishment of the Jebel Ali Free Zone, creating an integrated logistical and economic ecosystem that positioned Dubai as a global trade gateway and a model for sustainable economic development.
