Reem Al-Hashimi: Iran Has Taken an “Irrational” Path
In her striking statements, Reem Al-Hashimi, the UAE Minister of State for International Cooperation, criticized Iranian policies, categorizing them as part of an “irrational” path. In an interview with ABC News Australia, Al-Hashimi emphasized that the UAE has borne the brunt of Iranian attacks, highlighting the need to understand the repercussions of these actions on regional stability.
Increasing Iranian Targeting
Al-Hashimi stated that the UAE is suffering from missile and drone attacks from Iran, expressing her astonishment at Tehran’s targeting of countries that have always called for de-escalation. She clarified that “Tehran has gone beyond military targets to attack civilian infrastructure,” reiterating that these assaults not only include military bases but also extend to airports and oil tankers. She added, “Iran does not only attack military bases; it is actually targeting civilian infrastructure as well.”
UAE’s Strategic Alliances
In response to a question about how these tensions affect the UAE’s strategic alliances, Al-Hashimi affirmed that her country “is doubling down on its friends.” She explained that “moments of crisis will not weaken the path we are on, which is built on partnership and mutual respect.” In this context, she reiterated the importance of strengthening strategic ties and not allowing tensions to undermine those relationships.
International Response and Security Situation
Al-Hashimi pointed out that the international community has shown a clear stance against Iranian escalation, with 136 countries co-sponsoring a UN Security Council resolution condemning attacks against Gulf states. She noted that a commitment to international cooperation contributes to enhancing security and stability in the region.
Defense Capabilities and Economic Stability
Regarding maritime security, Al-Hashimi described the Iranian Revolutionary Guard’s use of the Strait of Hormuz as a pressure tool as an attempt “to undermine the strength of Gulf economies,” emphasizing that “the UAE’s economy remains a solid rock.” She also highlighted the UAE’s six-layer air defense system, integrated with multiple other systems, which has proven effective in maintaining a safe environment amid recent challenges, despite ongoing attacks.
Through her words, it is clear that Reem Al-Hashimi asserts that Iran has taken an “irrational” path, and that the UAE remains committed to continuing strong partnerships with its friends on the international stage.
