Iranian Revolutionary Guard Claims Tankers Exploded in Hormuz

The Iranian Revolutionary Guard has said two oil tankers exploded in the Strait of Hormuz, while also reporting that it stopped four other vessels attempting to pass through the strategic waterway. The force did not identify the nationality of the tankers, the scale of the damage, or whether any crew members were injured.

The Iranian Revolutionary Guard also said it had halted four ships that tried to cross the Strait of Hormuz, without disclosing their identities or explaining why they were detained, according to Iranian television.

These developments come at a time when shipping traffic through the strait has fallen sharply amid escalating confrontation between the United States and Iran.

Traffic through the strait drops sharply

Data from shipping analytics company “Kpler” showed that only eight vessels crossed the strait on Thursday, compared with 15 on Wednesday and 48 two weeks earlier.

Before the war broke out in late February, more than 100 ships passed through the Strait of Hormuz each day on average.
