In a significant development for Gulf studies, the University of Ibn Khaldun in Istanbul has kicked off its inaugural International Summer School focused on the Gulf region. This initiative, themed “Understanding the Gulf: Politics, Economy, and Society”, is organised in partnership with the University of Sharjah and aims to delve into the rich history, political frameworks, economic dynamics, and societal structures of the Gulf.
An Academic Gathering
The summer school spans five days and has attracted university students from diverse academic programmes and young researchers from around the globe. Participants are engaged in an intensive academic curriculum that highlights key aspects of the Gulf region.
Opening Ceremony Highlights
The opening event featured prominent figures including Dr. Atilla Arkan, President of Ibn Khaldun University; Dr. Ismail Numan Telci, Director of the Gulf Studies and Global Policies Centre; and Dr. Masoud Idris, Director of the Sharjah International Foundation for the History of Science among Arab and Islamic Scientists. Dr. Idris delivered a lecture titled “Traditions and Transformations in Gulf Society”, setting a scholarly tone for the sessions ahead.
Scholarly Contributions
Additionally, Dr. Saleh Alahiabi from the Department of History and Islamic Civilisation at the University of Sharjah presented a lecture on “Knowledge, Libraries, and Scientific Networks in the Arabian Gulf”. This formed part of a comprehensive programme featuring a series of scientific talks by esteemed academics and experts from renowned universities and research institutions.

The sessions covered a wide array of themes, including Gulf society, regional and foreign policies, security, political economy, cultural heritage, and intellectual history.
