ICOM Dubai 2025 Highlights Museum Education Experiences

The upcoming ICOM Dubai 2025 conference is set to revolutionize the landscape of museum education, engaging global experts in conversations about climate dialogue and international cooperation. Hosting this prominent event for the first time in the Middle East, Africa, and South Asia, Dubai aims to highlight pioneering experiences in museum education that resonate with diverse audiences and cultures.

Engagement Through Dialogue

The 27th General Conference of the International Council of Museums, ICOM Dubai 2025, recently continued its activities at the Dubai World Trade Centre. The second day featured significant discussions led by renowned experts. The keynote address by Hala Badri, General Director of Dubai Culture and Arts Authority, emphasized Dubai’s commitment to arts and culture, stating, “The victory of Dubai in hosting this global event is the result of a long journey of faith and hard work.”

Badri highlighted the vision that guided them towards ICOM Dubai 2025, which aims to showcase how museums can play a pivotal role in preserving intangible heritage and cultural identity. “This journey has inspired us to define the themes and scientific programs of the conference, including non-material heritage, modern technologies, and the power of youth,” she explained.

Redefining Museum Spaces

Raakan Al-Touq, Saudi Arabia’s Assistant Minister of Culture, presented his insights on the evolving role of museums. In his keynote speech, he remarked, “We live in rapidly changing societies where cultural awareness is growing, and the museum’s role is to contribute to analyzing historical narratives.” He discussed projects in Saudi Arabia focused on integrating national museums into the cultural landscape.

Further emphasizing this theme, Al-Touq stated, “Our responsibility extends beyond preserving heritage; it includes engaging the community in its narrative.” His vision for museums today is that they transform from mere repositories of artifacts into cultural beacons that encourage community participation and innovation.

Interactive Learning Experiences

Kamini Soni, founding director of the Photography Museum in Bengaluru, posed a critical question in her keynote address: “Who really owns this museum?” She stressed the importance of museums building trust with the communities they serve. The sessions on the second day delved into how museums can adapt to rapid changes in social values and cultural standards globally.

As part of ICOM Dubai 2025, the National Heritage Youth Committee from Singapore led an advanced training course titled “Reverse Mentorship: Empowering Youth for Museums and Heritage,” which engaged participants in meaningful discussions.

Cultural Experiences at the Exhibition

Alongside the conference sessions, the “Museum Exhibition” showcased interactive cultural experiences inspired by Emirati heritage. Attendees were treated to artisan performances by the Traditions Centre, embroidery showcases, and henna painting sessions with Dr. Azra Khamis. Visitors also enjoyed tasting coffee with Khalid Al-Mulla and had the opportunity to create their own perfumes under the guidance of Mona Haddad. The experience was further enriched by a culinary display from chefs Amina and Faisal, who presented a selection of local appetizers.

The blend of education and culture during ICOM Dubai 2025 emphasizes the vital role museums play in enriching community engagement and redefining educational experiences through innovative approaches. As the event continues, it is poised to inspire new perspectives on the future of museum education globally.
