The UAE has significantly amplified its global efforts in water diplomacy during Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week 2026, showcasing its commitment to international partnerships in water management. Led by His Excellency Abdullah Belhale, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Energy and Sustainability, the UAE underscored the importance of investments, youth empowerment, and enhancing the resilience of agricultural and food systems as fundamental strategies for addressing global water challenges in anticipation of the United Nations Water Conference 2026.
High-Level Engagements and Strategic Discussions
Throughout the week, His Excellency Belhale held meetings with representatives from various sectors, including government, private entities, financial institutions, youth, and civil society. These discussions aimed to craft practical contributions and build international momentum in preparation for the United Nations Water Conference 2026, which the UAE will co-host with the Republic of Senegal at the end of that year.
During the events, Belhale met with President Macky Sall of Senegal, who also participated in a high-level dialogue entitled “The Next Drop: Investment and Innovation in Water.” This session included water and energy ministers, CEOs, and senior officials from financial institutions, multilateral development banks, commercial banks, philanthropic organizations, and technology companies. The focus was on strategies for capital deployment and expanding technological innovations to enhance global water resilience.
Innovative Approaches and Policy Discussions
The dialogue further encompassed discussions on innovative policies, regulatory frameworks, funding structures, and emerging technologies. This initiative is part of a series of consultations led by the UAE since the unanimous adoption of six key thematic areas for interactive dialogue in July 2025, including the establishment of a dedicated focus on “Investment for Water: Financing, Technology, Innovation, and Capacity Building.”
Shaping the Future of Water Sustainability
His Excellency Abdullah Belhale emphasized that water is no longer merely a development issue but represents significant economic risks and opportunities. He stated, “We must transition from isolated projects to enacting comprehensive systemic changes. Long-term investment signals, more efficient governance, reduced risk for investors, and dynamic public-private partnerships are essential.”
The UAE’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs continued its engagement in water issues by hosting a high-level closed session on water and agricultural systems in collaboration with the Eurasia Group. This meeting addressed the critical link between water security, food security, and climate resilience.
During his remarks, Belhale noted, “Water is the future of food. As we look forward to the United Nations Water Conference 2026, we need to establish a new model for collaboration between the water and agriculture sectors that balances risks, stimulates innovation, and prioritizes climate resilience. The UAE is committed to building these bridges.”
A Commitment to International Cooperation
These engagements reflect the UAE’s steadfast commitment to practical, comprehensive international cooperation in preparation for the United Nations Water Conference 2026. The outcomes of the discussions during Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week will contribute significantly to the upcoming high-level preparatory meeting scheduled in Dakar on January 26-27, 2026. Furthermore, they will aid in formulating the national and multilateral roadmap for the UAE, reinforcing shared priorities across investments, governance strategies, youth empowerment, and water-food systems.
