The Sharjah Family Summit, titled “Sharjah Family Summit Discusses Challenges Faced by Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities Worldwide,” aims to raise awareness and enhance support for individuals with intellectual disabilities and their families. This summit coincides with the Self-Advocates Summit as part of the precursor events for the “We are Inclusion 2025” conference, where stakeholders gather to discuss common challenges and share effective solutions.

Goals and Recommendations of the Summit

Dr. Samia Saleh, Director of Al-Wafa School for the Development of the Able in Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services, welcomed visitors to the summit, which brings together 80 parents. The event aims to facilitate the exchange of experiences among families regarding the issues and challenges faced by individuals with intellectual disabilities. Dr. Saleh emphasized in her statements to “Sharjah 24” that the summit will yield several valuable recommendations that will enrich the “We are Inclusion 2025” conference.

Exchange of International Experiences

Dr. Samia highlighted the importance of cultural diversity at the summit, where parents from various nationalities are participating. This diversity contributes to gathering local and international experiences, aiding in the development of solutions that address issues related to intellectual disabilities. She also noted that the Comprehensive Inclusion Organization, representing individuals with intellectual disabilities and their families, includes around 112 international institutions, reflecting a global support network.

“We are Inclusion 2025” Conference

The “We are Inclusion 2025” conference is scheduled to begin next Monday at the Sharjah Expo Center and will last for three days, with participation from 74 countries, 125 institutions, and 134 self-advocates, in addition to 152 speakers and 59 sessions, including 9 parallel sessions. During the conference, comprehensive discussions are expected to revolve around the future of inclusion and empowerment for individuals with intellectual disabilities and their families, presenting a comprehensive action plan that includes key areas reflecting the transition from community initiatives to executable national policies.
