Gargash: Iran is a Long-Term Threat, and Rebuilding Trust Requires “Eons”
In a discussion about regional security, Dr. Anwar Gargash, diplomatic advisor to the President of the United Arab Emirates, highlighted the challenges facing relations between regional countries and Iran. He regards Iran as a “long-term threat” that necessitates a prolonged effort to rebuild trust, emphasizing that this will involve complex details and factors. This article explores Gargash’s insights on how terrorism and diplomacy affect these relations and how restoring eroded trust will take considerable time.
The Difference Between Relations and Trust
During a dialogue via Zoom with the head of the French Institute for International Relations, Gargash stressed the importance of understanding the difference between “rebuilding relations” and “rebuilding trust.” He clarified that trust cannot be easily achieved, especially in the aftermath of successive crises, pointing to the intense attacks on the Gulf region involving 2,800 missiles and drones. He stated, “This will take ‘eons and eons’ to heal.”
Iran as a Long-Term Threat
Gargash shed light on recent events in the region, noting that these issues will significantly impact Iran’s standing in the future. It has become clear to the UAE and neighboring countries that Iran represents a “long-term threat.” He explained that the attacks targeting Gulf states were deliberate and carefully planned, illustrating Tehran’s disregard for Iranian-Arab relations.
The Current Iranian Situation
In assessing the political situation in Iran, Gargash pointed to the existence of a fragmented and disorganized government. He expressed concern that Iran might interpret the current circumstances as a “victory,” which could complicate matters further. He also emphasized the need for cautious handling of the existing situation, especially amid discussions about rebuilding regional trust.
UAE Defense Efforts
The UAE Ministry of Defense previously announced that air defense forces had intercepted 537 ballistic missiles, 26 cruise missiles, and 2,256 drones targeting the country. It also reported that the number of casualties reached 224, with a diversity of nationalities involved. The ministry confirmed that these attacks have significantly impacted regional security stability, renewing discussions about the long-term threat posed by Iran.
