Fujairah Launches Strategic Oil Logistics Center in Egypt

In a significant development for Egypt‘s energy sector, the Emirati company Fujairah is set to establish a logistics hub for crude oil storage and trading in the Alamein area of Egypt. This strategic initiative involves a planned initial investment of $500 million, aimed at enhancing the country’s oil infrastructure and trade capabilities. As Fujairah embarks on this venture, it underscores the strengthening economic ties between the UAE and Egypt, with plans set in motion for the coming year.

Strategic Agreements with Fujairah

The announcements from government officials come on the heels of three pivotal agreements signed between Egypt’s Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources and the Emirate of Fujairah earlier this month. These agreements aim to establish a joint Egyptian company dedicated to creating a logistical hub for the storage and trading of crude oil and petroleum products in the Mediterranean basin of Alamein. Additionally, a contract has been finalized for crude oil storage facilities at the Fujairah-managed Al-Hamra port, alongside a commercial agreement to supply petroleum products for the Egyptian Petroleum Authority.

Collaborative Ventures with WEPCO

In further commitments, a government source revealed that Fujairah has signed a contract with the Western Desert Petroleum Company (WEPCO) to utilize 150,000 tons monthly for storing oil and petroleum products at WEPCO’s Al-Hamra port. This quantity is flexible, with indications that it may increase based on demand from the Emirati company in the future. WEPCO will oversee the operations of safeguarding and managing the storage and trading of crude oil from various oil companies operating in the Western Desert.

Economic Impact and Infrastructure Development

As the only specialized port on the Mediterranean coast fully owned by the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation, the Al-Hamra facility is critical for oil export logistics. The arrangements will also lead to monthly fees for WEPCO, maximizing the economic returns from Egypt’s infrastructure. With Egypt consuming around 12 million tons of diesel and approximately 6.7 million tons of gasoline annually, any increase in domestic oil production or refining activity is expected to lower import costs and ease the strain on the country’s foreign currency resources.

The Global Position of Fujairah Port

Fujairah Port is internationally recognized as a strategic center for the storage and trading of oil and its derivatives, ranking as the second-largest facility globally for these operations. This new logistical area in Egypt signifies not just an investment in infrastructure, but also a collaborative effort that could reshape the energy landscape in the region, paving the way for sustainable economic growth.
