From the intricate threads woven by Emirati women’s hands for adornment of garments, to the luxurious gold and gemstones that now showcase its geometric patterns, the traditional craft of “safifah” has transitioned from heritage memory to contemporary design. This transformation reinterprets an essential element of local heritage through a modern lens, while still retaining its authentic characteristics.
A Celebration of UAE Heritage and Women’s Empowerment
This cultural journey is brought to life through a collaboration between the “Irthi Contemporary Crafts Council” and Emirati jeweller Adi Al Fardan. Coinciding with Emirati Women’s Day, they unveil an exclusive collection inspired by the structure, formations, and visual repetitions of “safifah”. This project is based on meticulous research and documentation from the council’s archives regarding this traditional craft.
Threads of Tradition and Modern Design
The collection does not merely borrow the aesthetic form of “safifah”; it also evokes the human story intertwined with it. Traditionally, Emirati women have been guardians of this craft, learning, practising, and passing it down through generations. Thus, the launch of the collection on Emirati Women’s Day transcends a mere celebration of design. It serves as a tribute to women’s pivotal role in preserving and evolving cultural heritage, giving it new relevance in contemporary life.
The Collection Details
The collection is the result of an in-depth study of the “safifah” structure, characterised by its interweavings, repetitions, and geometric formations. Adi Al Fardan has translated these elements into the language of jewellery, maintaining their Emirati identity while providing a modern interpretation. It comprises four sets, each featuring a bracelet, necklace, earrings, and ring, crafted in 18-carat gold in white, yellow, and rose tones. The gemstones incorporated into the designs reflect the colours of the UAE flag.
A Limited Edition with Timely Significance
This exclusive collection is available as a limited edition for one month only, aligning with the month dedicated to Emirati Women’s Day. It will also be showcased at the “Irthi Contemporary Crafts Council” pavilion during the 2026 Abu Dhabi International Hunting and Equestrian Exhibition.
In bridging the gap between traditional craftsmanship and modern design, this initiative not only highlights the artistic potential of “safifah” but also celebrates the enduring legacy of Emirati women in keeping cultural crafts alive.
