Five UAE Heritage Sites Recognized by the Islamic Community

In a significant cultural achievement, five archaeological sites from the United Arab Emirates have been officially added to the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) list of tangible Islamic heritage. Among these sites is the prominent Saruq Al Hadid in Dubai, complemented by four additional historic locations in Sharjah. This inclusion not only underscores the rich cultural legacy of the UAE but also highlights the nation’s commitment to preserving its historical assets.

Significant Connotations of Saruq Al Hadid

The Ministry of Culture made this announcement during the XIII session of the Islamic World Heritage Committee held in Uzbekistan. Saruq Al Hadid, located in the Dubai desert approximately 95 kilometers from the city, is regarded as one of the standout archaeological sites. Discovered in 2002 by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the site features remnants of ancient smelting activity evidenced by black slag found in the sand dunes.

Archaeological studies indicate that Saruq Al Hadid dates back to the Early Bronze Age around 2600 BCE and thrived until the Late Iron Age around 550 BCE. This historical timeline positions it as one of the richest sites for mining and metal production in the southeastern Arabian Peninsula. Excavations have unearthed thousands of artifacts, including bronze, pottery, stone tools, and various weapons, affirming its status as a prominent industrial hub during the Iron Age.

Heritage Sites in Sharjah

In addition to Saruq Al Hadid, ISESCO recognized the cultural landscape of the Al Faya site, which holds vital evidence of early human settlement and is a beacon of prehistoric heritage. The organization also highlighted Wadi Al Helo, located in the eastern region, noted as the earliest site for copper mining in the Arabian Peninsula during the transitional period from the Neolithic to the Bronze Age. This site provides a comprehensive glimpse into the development of copper mining technologies and the adaptation of ancient inhabitants to their geological environment.

Wadi Al Helo features rock engravings from the Bronze Age and the ruins of historic villages, making it a vibrant example of the integration of natural and cultural heritage, as well as an ideal destination for eco-tourism activities like hiking and camping.

Strategic Historical Sites in Khorfakkan

Additionally, the historical towers and forts in Khorfakkan have been incorporated into the ISESCO list, representing an integrated defensive system that underscores the city’s strategic significance through the centuries. Noteworthy structures include the Portuguese fort and the Al Adwani Tower, both crucial for protecting the harbor. The Portuguese fort is particularly significant as it is the only triangular-shaped fort still standing in Eastern Arabia today, reflecting architectural evolution from the 14th to the 20th century.

Furthermore, the region of Al Nahwa, located south of Khorfakkan, has also been recognized for its unique archaeological and cultural value. It encompasses rock engravings from multiple eras, spanning from the Bronze Age to modern times, which have been documented using advanced 3D digital techniques to ensure the preservation of this human heritage.

The recent inclusion of these sites adds to the United Arab Emirates’ ongoing efforts to amplify its presence on international heritage lists, following previous recognitions of sites such as the Umm an-Nar settlement and burial mounds in Abu Dhabi, the Abu Dhabi Sabkha, Dubai Creek, and many notable sites in Sharjah. The recognition of Saruq Al Hadid and these additional archaeological sites signifies a strong commitment to the conservation and promotion of the UAE’s rich cultural heritage for generations to come.
