UAE Unveils Historic Aluminum Shipment Powered by Nuclear Energy

In a move that reflects the UAE’s commitment to sustainability, Emirates Global Aluminum and the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation announced the delivery of the first shipment of low-carbon aluminum produced using electricity generated from the Barakah nuclear power plants. This achievement marks a significant milestone in the UAE’s journey toward meeting its environmental goals and strengthens its position as a leading global supplier of industrial materials based on clean energy.

First Shipment of Low-Carbon Aluminum

Emirates Global Aluminum announced the delivery of a new shipment named “Minimal,” which includes low-carbon aluminum. This batch was produced using electricity from the Barakah nuclear power plants, with the contract established with Canex, a specialized aluminum producer in Egypt, representing a major accomplishment. This collaboration is the first of its kind, paving the way for the use of “Minimal” aluminum in various products, including infrastructure, solar energy, and transportation.

The Role of Nuclear Energy in Promoting Sustainability

His Excellency Mohamed Al Hamadi, Managing Director and CEO of the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation, stated, “This achievement highlights the pivotal role of nuclear energy in enhancing energy security in the UAE.” Al Hamadi explained that the Barakah plants provide clean electricity around the clock, supporting industries that rely heavily on energy, such as aluminum manufacturing. This approach contributes to establishing a carbon-neutral economy and positively impacts long-term sustainability.

Growing Demand for Low-Carbon Aluminum

In this context, Abd al-Nasser bin Kalban, CEO of Emirates Global Aluminum, noted that the demand for low-carbon aluminum is rapidly increasing, with expectations to triple by 2040. Bin Kalban emphasized that the company aims to be a reliable partner in the future of sustainable industries through the “Minimal” product, supported by the nation’s vision to invest in nuclear energy.

Canex’s Commitment to Sustainability

On another note, Moatasem Dabboul, General Manager of Canex, reaffirmed their commitment to achieving sustainability at all stages of production. This approach reflects the company’s model of recycling, where waste is transformed into valuable products. By utilizing “Minimal” aluminum, they can reduce emissions from the outset during production processes.

The UAE relies on a “Clean Energy Certificates” system, based on the protocols of the International Renewable Energy Certificate Standard (I-REC), to ensure the tracking and reliability of energy. Thanks to these efforts, the Barakah plants produce 40 terawatt-hours of clean electricity annually, equivalent to 25% of the country’s needs.

Emirates Global Aluminum remains a leader in the aluminum industry, being the first company to produce aluminum using solar energy. The company plans to build the largest aluminum recycling plant in the country, expected to begin production in the first half of 2026, reflecting its commitment to environmental goals and sustainable energy.
