In a significant display of commitment to global dialogue and harmony, the UAE’s Federal National Council participated in the 14th session of the International Parliament for Tolerance and Peace held in Skopje, North Macedonia. Under the theme “Tolerance and Peace: The Strategic Role of Parliaments in Shaping Legislation and Defining Future Policies,” this session highlighted the critical role parliaments play in fostering sustainable peace and mutual understanding.
The Role of Parliaments in Peacebuilding
During his address, Mohammed Issa Al-Kashif, a member of the Federal National Council, emphasized the profound responsibilities shouldered by parliamentary institutions in an era marked by swift transformations and complex challenges. He stated, “The title of the session clearly reflects the weight of responsibility on parliaments in a world facing intertwined issues, be it security, development, or technological and social changes.” Al-Kashif asserted that parliaments have become essential partners in building future visions, crafting public policies, and promoting a culture of dialogue, coexistence, and tolerance among diverse peoples and cultures.
The UAE’s Stance on Tolerance
In his remarks, Al-Kashif underscored that reinforcing the principles of peace and tolerance necessitates respecting the sovereignty of nations and adhering to international law. He articulated, “The United Arab Emirates firmly rejects Iran’s aggressive actions and behaviors that contradict good neighborliness and represent a clear violation of international law and regional stability.” He condemned attacks targeting civilians and essential facilities, as well as rhetoric of escalation and hatred, which he asserted are fundamentally incompatible with the values of tolerance, peace, and coexistence that the global community strives to nurture.
Addressing Global Issues
Further emphasizing the need for true peace, Al-Kashif remarked that “real peace cannot be achieved amidst violations of state sovereignty or threats to people’s security, nor through the use of force, violence, and terrorism.” He articulated the moral and legislative responsibility of parliaments to confront extremist rhetoric and support policies that promote dialogue, moderation, and respect for states’ sovereignty.
Commitment to a Shared Future
Al-Kashif reiterated the UAE’s absolute rejection of any threats or claims that undermine its sovereignty or national security, firmly dismissing the allegations put forth by Iran and attempts to justify terrorist attacks. He pointed to a shared responsibility to develop legislation and policies that respond to future challenges while safeguarding common human values and promoting a culture of dialogue and moderation. He affirmed the UAE’s commitment to continuing its efforts in supporting all international initiatives aimed at spreading peace and enhancing the values of tolerance and human coexistence, collaborating with various parliaments and international institutions to create a future characterized by security, stability, and prosperity for all.
