Improving Employee Wellbeing Through Ibn Al-Deera Initiatives

In a world where the well-being of workers is increasingly prioritized, enhancing the quality of workers’ lives is a vital aspect of sustainable development. This commitment is particularly evident in the United Arab Emirates, where the government has implemented numerous policies aimed at safeguarding workers’ rights and ensuring their safety. By focusing on health regulations and fair practices, the UAE not only protects its workforce but also enhances their quality of life, allowing them to thrive in a supportive environment.

The UAE’s policy to protect workers from heat stress, implemented for the twenty-second consecutive year, serves as an advanced model for human care, dignity, and safety in the workplace. This policy prohibits work under direct sunlight and in outdoor areas from 12:30 PM to 3:00 PM. Under the supervision of the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation, this policy has been in effect since June 15 and will continue until September 15, 2026, reaffirming the country’s firm commitment to establishing the highest standards of occupational health and safety while enhancing the quality of life for workers.

The prohibition of work during the midday hours is a fundamental pillar of the labor system in the UAE. Since its introduction over two decades ago, this ban has become a prominent feature of the humanitarian approach adopted by the state in dealing with the workforce. As a key partner in the development journey, this policy has contributed to reducing health risks associated with high temperatures during the summer months, providing protection for thousands of workers from heat stress and workplace accidents.

In recent years, the compliance rate among companies has exceeded 99%, reflecting the strong partnership between the ministry and the private sector, as well as the advanced awareness among employers of the importance of providing a safe and healthy work environment for workers. Among the key initiatives that enhance the success of the heat stress protection policy is the ministry’s provision of approximately 12,000 air-conditioned rest areas equipped with comfort facilities for delivery workers across the country. This initiative, now in its fourth year, represents a practical translation of the humanitarian dimension in the UAE’s legislation and policies.

The UAE does not view economic development in isolation from the human dimension; rather, it places people at the center of all its policies and programs. The government continues to solidify its advanced global model for protecting labor and enhancing safety, contributing to improving workers’ quality of life and making the work environment safer and healthier.
