The launch of a new maritime transport service in the Comoros Islands marks a significant partnership with the UAE, enhancing connectivity and economic development in the region. This innovative service, the first of its kind, will facilitate the movement of individuals and vehicles across the Comorian archipelago, reinforcing trade and regional integration. With the presence of President Azali Assoumani and key stakeholders, this initiative promises to elevate the socio-economic landscape of the islands.
Inaugural Launch of the Maritime Service
On the island of Anjouan, the new ferry service was officially unveiled, attended by His Excellency President Azali Assoumani of the Comoros. This groundbreaking service links the islands of the Comorian archipelago in East Africa and stands out as the first to offer both passenger and vehicle transport. The initiative is spearheaded by SearDel International, a joint venture between Abu Dhabi Ports Group and Resources Investment, a strategic investment firm based in Abu Dhabi.
A Vision for Regional Integration
The launch ceremony was graced by the presence of H.E. Jumaa Rashid Al Remeithi, the UAE Ambassador to Moroni, among other prominent officials. This venture aligns with SearDel International’s efforts to foster maritime trade and expand business operations in emerging markets, particularly across Africa. According to Abdulaziz Zayed Al Shamsi, CEO of SearDel International, “This step confirms our capacity to deliver integrated maritime transport solutions that meet local community needs while contributing to business growth and economic progress in the region, following the directives of our wise leadership.”
Improving Connectivity and Economic Growth
The transportation services will be operated by Nawatoma Marine, a subsidiary of Abu Dhabi Ports Group. Their mission is to enhance connectivity among the region’s islands by providing secure, reliable, and affordable transport for local communities. This initiative is set to improve access to markets, healthcare, and educational services while also stimulating the tourism sector.
The Ferry Service: Amenities and Impact
The new ferry, named “Yamila,” has the capacity to accommodate up to 190 passengers in air-conditioned cabins and can carry up to 45 vehicles. This service will connect the Port of Moroni, the primary maritime gateway in Grande Comore, with the city of Moutsamoudou on the volcanic island of Anjouan. By offering a faster and more reliable means of transportation between the two islands, this service is poised to greatly benefit both residents and visitors of the archipelago.
