Dubais Terminal 1 Bridge Expansion to Revolutionize Road Infrastructure

Dubai Roads and Transport Authority Awards Contract for Expansion of Bridge Leading to Terminal 1 at Dubai Airport

In a move aimed at enhancing traffic flow and improving the traveler experience, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai has announced the awarding of a contract for the expansion of the bridge leading to Terminal 1 at Dubai International Airport. This project is part of the authorities’ efforts to keep pace with the continuous increase in passenger numbers, which are expected to exceed 92 million in 2024. This report outlines the details and objectives of the project.

Bridge Expansion to Enhance Traffic Flow

The bridge expansion project aims to improve traffic flow by increasing the number of lanes. The current number of lanes is three, but it will be expanded to four to meet the anticipated growth in passenger traffic. This expansion will allow for more vehicles to pass through, reducing travel time and enhancing the experience for airport users.

Innovative Construction Technology

According to the Director General of the Roads and Transport Authority, His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, the project includes the construction of a new bridge using modern technology that incorporates steel box girders combined with a composite concrete slab. These engineering solutions were chosen for their high structural efficiency and the ability to achieve completion in a short timeframe. Additionally, this design will allow the project to be executed without the need for traffic diversions or temporary supports beneath the bridge, ensuring that current traffic flow is not affected.

Comprehensive Infrastructure Improvements

The bridge expansion project also includes improvements to road surfacing and infrastructure services. These enhancements consist of landscaping works and the installation of street lighting to improve safety and visibility. With a total bridge length of 171 meters, including a bridge section of approximately 70 meters, it is expected that the bridge’s capacity will increase from 4,200 vehicles per hour to 5,600 vehicles per hour, representing a 33% increase in capacity.

Meeting Future Needs

The expansion of the bridge leading to Terminal 1 at Dubai Airport is part of a comprehensive vision aimed at meeting the increasing demand for transportation services in the emirate. These efforts are not only intended to enhance the existing infrastructure but also to ensure a comfortable and safe experience for travelers, reflecting Dubai’s commitment to providing the highest quality standards in transportation services.
