The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai has successfully completed a series of rapid traffic improvements aimed at enhancing connectivity between Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Khail Road via Al Meydan Road. These developments include significant enhancements designed to reduce traffic congestion and improve traffic flow, reflecting the RTA’s commitment to providing advanced infrastructure. Through these initiatives, the RTA seeks to meet the needs of the growing urban development in the emirate and enhance the quality of life for both residents and visitors.
Notable Traffic Improvements
The RTA has expanded the exit number (D69) from Sheikh Zayed Road to Al Meydan Road, transforming it from a single lane to two lanes. This improvement has increased the vehicle capacity from 1,500 to 3,000 vehicles per hour, resulting in a travel time reduction of up to 40% during peak hours. This significant step is part of the RTA’s efforts to achieve seamless connectivity between Dubai’s main roads.
Bridge Capacity Enhancement
As part of the improvements, the capacity of the bridge over Al Khail Road has been increased from three to four lanes. This expansion enhances the bridge’s capacity, increasing the vehicle throughput from 4,500 to 6,000 vehicles per hour. The result has been a reduction in crossing time during peak hours from 7 minutes to 4 minutes, significantly minimizing waiting times.
Expansion of Connector Links
The RTA has also worked on expanding the connector links between the surface road and the bridge, which has helped alleviate traffic bottlenecks and improve traffic flow. This enhancement has led to a waiting time reduction of over 50%, particularly during the afternoon and evening hours. These solutions have proven effective in facilitating vehicle movement between Dubai’s key streets.
The RTA continues its efforts to develop and improve the road network as part of a strategic plan that includes over 75 traffic enhancements by 2025.
