In an initiative to promote innovation and the use of modern technologies, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai organized a hackathon titled “Generative AI Meets Open Data.” The event saw the participation of over 70 students from various colleges and universities across the country, reflecting the youth’s interest in technology and the development of smart mobility solutions. The generative AI hackathon aims to utilize open data sets to present innovative ideas aimed at enhancing transportation services in Dubai.
Event Organization and Partner Roles
The event was organized by the Public Transport Agency, along with the Corporate Technical Support and Strategy and Corporate Governance sectors of the RTA, in collaboration with BytePlus, a company specializing in developing technical solutions. The organization of the generative AI hackathon provided an opportunity to leverage open data directed towards achieving smart transportation strategies.
Enhancing Innovation Through Collaboration
The competition serves as a vivid example of attracting creative minds from outside the authority, allowing for the integration of new and diverse insights into the institutional framework for innovation. This initiative contributes to enhancing the ability to innovate comprehensive and effective solutions for the future of mobility in Dubai, where a diversity of opinions is a key factor in generating more innovative ideas.
Evaluation Stages and Support
The Corporate Strategy and Governance sector played a crucial role in the success of the event by coordinating with universities, colleges, and startup institutions to invite them to participate. Additionally, the RTA designed a transparent evaluation mechanism for the submitted ideas, providing support and guidance to the youth throughout the various stages of the generative AI hackathon. Emphasis was also placed on the necessity of registering innovative ideas in a manner that protects intellectual property rights.
Results and Recognition of Participants
The generative AI hackathon resulted in nine teams reaching the final stage, where they presented their projects before a panel of experts from the RTA and its strategic partners. The award ceremony for the top three winning teams is expected to be held during the Dubai World Autonomous Mobility Conference 2025 in September, providing these teams with an opportunity to showcase their ideas and benefit from future partnerships with the RTA.
Continuing to support innovation through such events represents an important step towards achieving Dubai’s vision of becoming a leading city in smart mobility. These events also help motivate young people to present ideas that contribute to improving the quality of life.
