Dubai Municipality has set an ambitious target to achieve zero waste directed to landfills by 2034, a cornerstone of its integrated waste management strategy for 2041. The initiative underscores the emirate’s commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility, aiming for a significant reduction in the per capita daily waste generated. With a rigorous plan in place, the municipality aims to reduce individual waste production to 1.7 kilograms by 2041, down from the current 2.1 kilograms. This proactive approach highlights the importance of community engagement in reaching these sustainability goals.
Leading the Charge with ‘Circle Dubai’
Engineer Adel Mohammed Al Marzouqi, Executive Director of the Waste and Drainage Authority at Dubai Municipality, emphasized that the ‘Circle Dubai’ project is a pioneering step toward realizing the broader objectives of the municipality’s waste management strategy. During a recent press conference at the Asia-Pacific Cities Summit, he elaborated on the project’s suite of educational and community initiatives planned for the upcoming phases, showcasing collaboration across public and private sectors, as well as with schools and local communities. Al Marzouqi pointed out that the success of the initiative hinges on active community participation in source separation and daily waste reduction.
A Win-Win Situation for All
Al Marzouqi further explained that the project embodies the concept of “profit for all.” This framework not only allows Dubai Municipality to minimize waste and fulfill environmental objectives but also enables businesses to capitalize on waste-to-energy projects. Meanwhile, residents stand to benefit from a cleaner and more sustainable environment. He highlighted that the waste-to-energy project serves as a tangible example of Dubai’s circular economy, with a total investment of approximately $1 billion, generating about 200 megawatts of electricity—sufficient to power over 135,000 homes in the emirate. The generated energy is sold to the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority under a long-term strategic partnership agreement.
A Vision for a Landfill-Free Future
Al Marzouqi affirmed that ‘Circle Dubai’ transcends mere environmental initiatives; it represents a holistic vision for constructing a landfill-free city while enhancing community well-being and resource sustainability. This overarching goal contributes to positioning Dubai among the best cities globally for living, working, and fostering sustainability, making significant strides toward zero waste directed to landfills by 2034.
