DP World Develops Strategic Facilities in Afghanistan

In a significant move to enhance regional trade links, DP World has signed an agreement with the Afghan government to develop and improve key border facilities in the Torkham and Hairatan areas. This collaboration marks a milestone in strengthening trade infrastructure, boosting Afghanistan’s capacity to become an important trade hub connecting Central and South Asia.

Strategic Partnership to Enhance Trade

The agreement, considered a public-private partnership, includes a commitment from DP World to conduct a detailed technical and financial feasibility study before finalizing the contract. This partnership is expected to result in a comprehensive upgrade of the infrastructure, along with the implementation of advanced cargo handling systems and the digitization of border operations. This will significantly improve trade efficiency and increase its security and reliability.

Signing the Agreement and Future Work Structure

The agreement was signed by Hajji Mufti Abdul Mateen Saeed, the Deputy Minister of Revenue and Customs of Afghanistan, on behalf of the Afghan government, while Nasser Al Neyadi represented DP World as the Deputy CEO. Commenting on the agreement, Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem, the group’s CEO, stated that “effective trade corridors are a crucial element in enhancing economic resilience.”

Economic and Social Impact

DP World will also focus on addressing local employment issues and skill development, collaborating with partners in Afghanistan to ensure the sustainability of these projects. It is essential for the Afghan government to continue managing border services, including customs, immigration, and security, to ensure safe and smooth operations in collaboration with the group.

The Torkham and Hairatan ports are vital arteries for Afghanistan’s trade, with statistics showing that annual trade reaches billions of dollars, exceeding $1.6 billion in trade with Pakistan alone in 2024. Despite this significant trade reality, the current infrastructure and traditional procedures hinder effective trade flow, highlighting the need to modernize these crossings to enhance Afghanistan’s position as an important regional transit corridor.

By developing strategic facilities in Afghanistan, DP World hopes to bring about positive changes that will benefit the Afghan economy and improve living standards in the region, marking a step towards a more stable and prosperous future.
