Dubai Police Catch Biker Speeding Over 290 km/h

In a striking incident highlighting the dangers of reckless driving, the Dubai Traffic Police apprehended a motorcyclist who was filmed speeding at an astonishing 290 kilometres per hour. This alarming behaviour not only endangers the rider’s life but also poses significant risks to other road users.

The Reckless Ride

Major Jumaa Salem Bin Suwaidan, the Director of the General Department of Traffic at Dubai Police, has made it clear that such high-speed motorcycle riding is among the most dangerous traffic behaviours. The rider was observed performing risky stunts, including riding on one wheel and zigzagging between vehicles—a blatant disregard for traffic laws and public safety.

Legal Action Taken

Following the incident, traffic enforcement teams took necessary legal actions against the rider. This included impounding the motorcycle and applying the provisions of Local Decree No. 30 of 2023, which allows for fines of up to AED 50,000 to recover impounded vehicles involved in serious traffic violations. The rider has also been referred to the relevant authorities to continue the legal process.

Understanding the Risks

Major Bin Suwaidan emphasised that such reckless behaviour constitutes more than just traffic violations; they represent dangerously irresponsible actions that can result in fatal accidents within seconds. Riding at such high speeds reduces the rider’s ability to control the bike or respond effectively to sudden changes in the road conditions. The distance required to stop the motorcycle increases significantly, surpassing the rider’s ability to avoid danger.

The Horrific Consequences

The consequences of losing control at speeds exceeding 290 km/h are often catastrophic. When an accident occurs, the rider can be thrown from the bike due to the sheer force, potentially colliding with roadside barriers, luminaires, or being propelled into opposing traffic, which can result in serious injuries or fatalities. Riders lack the protective structures of enclosed vehicles, increasing their vulnerability significantly.

The Dangers of Stunt Riding

Certain stunts, such as riding on one wheel, drastically impair the motorcycle’s balance and diminish the rider’s ability to handle braking and steering. This not only heightens the likelihood of losing control but also makes navigating road obstacles, sudden gusts of wind, or changes in road surface conditions perilously challenging.

The Impact on Road Safety

Driving at dangerously high speeds further undermines the rider’s field of vision, impairs their distance judgement, and slows decision-making processes. Such extreme behaviour increases collision forces when accidents occur, heightening the chances of severe injuries or fatalities, while also putting innocent road users at risk of collision or sudden evasive action, potentially leading to multi-vehicle accidents.

A Firm Stance on Reckless Driving

Major Bin Suwaidan reiterated that Dubai Police will not tolerate such reckless behaviour, assuring that smart monitoring systems and field enforcement teams are poised to detect and catch offenders. He stressed that preserving life is a shared responsibility, asserting that roads should not serve as venues for reckless display or speed tests. He urged motorcyclists to adhere to traffic regulations and drive responsibly, prioritising their safety and that of all road users.
