Dubai‘s traffic control teams have successfully apprehended a motorcyclist who was recorded driving at a staggering speed of over 290 kilometres per hour. In a widely shared video, the rider exhibited dangerous stunts, including balancing on one wheel and zigzagging between vehicles, in a blatant disregard for traffic laws and the safety of others.
Proactive Measures by Dubai Police
Major General Jumaa Salem Bin Suwaidan, Director of the General Department of Traffic, stated that such reckless driving behaviours pose significant threats not only to the rider but also to fellow road users. He emphasised the necessity for strict enforcement of traffic regulations to prevent such perilous activities.
Legal Actions Taken
In response to the incident, authorities have initiated the necessary legal procedures against the motorcyclist. This includes impounding the motorcycle and implementing the stipulations of Local Decree No. 30 of 2023, which may impose fines up to 50,000 dirhams for the release of vehicles involved in serious traffic violations. Furthermore, the driver has been referred to relevant authorities for further legal processing.
The Dangers of Reckless Riding
Bin Suwaidan cautioned that such actions are not merely traffic infractions but rather reckless behaviours that could lead to catastrophic accidents within seconds. Riding a motorcycle at such high speeds compromises the rider’s control and hinders their ability to react to sudden changes on the road, significantly increasing the stopping distance and limiting the capacity to avoid hazards.
Potential Consequences of High-Speed Riding
He highlighted that losing control at speeds exceeding 290 km/h can result in the rider being propelled over long distances, leading to severe collisions with barriers, street lights, or even oncoming traffic. The lack of protection that motorcycles offer compared to enclosed vehicles heightens the risk of serious injuries or fatalities, he noted.
Impact on Other Road Users
Additionally, weaving between vehicles at such excessive speeds creates immense risks. A driver may attempt to change lanes, believing the road is clear, only for the speeding motorcycle to close the gap almost instantaneously, resulting in unavoidable collisions.
The Hazards of Stunt Riding
Performing tricks such as riding on one wheel is particularly dangerous, as it severely undermines the motorcycle’s balance and the rider’s ability to steer or brake effectively. This increases the likelihood of abrupt fall or veering off course, especially when encountering bumps, sudden winds, or changes in road surface conditions.
The Broader Implications of Speeding
Bin Suwaidan concluded by pointing out that extreme speeds can narrow a rider’s field of vision and impair their distance judgement while also slowing decision-making processes. Moreover, the force of impact in an accident multiplies significantly at high speeds, raising the likelihood of severe injuries or fatalities and presenting dangers to innocent road users who may need to swerve suddenly to avoid the motorcycle. He warned that such reckless behaviours could also trigger chain reactions involving multiple vehicles due to the unforeseen responses of other drivers.
