The Dubai Municipality has awarded the contract for the first phase of the “Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary Development” project, an ambitious initiative aimed at enhancing biodiversity and the tourism appeal of the area. With an estimated cost of approximately 100 million dirhams, this project marks the first step in a series of improvements that will create a sustainable natural environment, reflecting Dubai’s commitment to sustainability and the protection of wildlife.
The Dubai Municipality announced the awarding of the contract for the first phase of the Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary development project, with an estimated cost of around 100 million dirhams for this phase. The total cost of the project, which will be divided into two phases, is expected to reach approximately 650 million dirhams. This project aligns with the city’s ambitious environmental goals by improving ecosystems and maintaining the sustainability of natural habitats, making the sanctuary a prime destination for sustainable eco-tourism.
The first phase of the project will cover an area of up to 6.4 square kilometers within the sanctuary, with completion expected by the end of next year. The development work includes the rehabilitation of mangrove habitats, where new mangrove trees will be planted, increasing the vegetation cover of mangroves by 60%. Additionally, the project involves opening channels and rehabilitating forests. The first phase will also introduce new habitats and develop areas such as the mangrove lake and other ponds, contributing to the restoration of ecological balance.
The first phase is also set to increase the area of water bodies by 144%, enhancing the total area to 74 hectares. This expansion is expected to increase carbon dioxide absorption rates by 60% and contribute to maximizing the area of mudflats within the sanctuary. These additions play a vital role in supporting ecosystems and biodiversity, making the sanctuary more attractive to visitors.
The Director General of Dubai Municipality, Eng. Marwan Ahmad bin Ghalita, stated that “the Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary development project is one of the prominent initiatives aimed at enhancing the infrastructure of environmental facilities in the emirate.” He added that this project seeks to promote Dubai as an ideal destination for eco-tourism, reflecting the city’s ambition to be the best place to live, work, and visit globally. The unique design of the project represents a turning point in Dubai’s efforts to develop natural reserves through innovative practices that support environmental sustainability.
This initiative is part of Dubai’s vision to be a global model in natural resource management and environmental conservation. The development of the Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary underscores the importance of ongoing efforts to protect wildlife and natural areas, enhancing Dubai’s status as a unique tourism hub that celebrates biodiversity.
