Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary to Undergo $177M Revitalization

Dubai is making significant strides in environmental preservation with the awarding of a contract for a major upgrade to the Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary. This ambitious project, totaling AED650 million ($177 million), aims to transform the sanctuary into a beacon of sustainable urban eco-tourism, highlighting the emirate’s commitment to blending natural conservation with urban development. This revitalization aligns with broader goals outlined in the 2040 Urban Master Plan and reaffirms Dubai’s dedication to enhancing its natural reserves.

Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary Development Project: Phase One

The first phase of the Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary Development Project has been awarded a contract valued at AED100 million ($27.2 million). This initial phase aims to rehabilitate the sanctuary’s unique ecosystems, prioritizing biodiversity and climate resilience. Key features include:

  • A 60 percent increase in mangrove coverage, expanding from 40 to 65 hectares.
  • A 144 percent increase in water bodies, boosting their area to 74 hectares, which will enhance CO₂ absorption by 60 percent.
  • The creation of new habitats, including Mangrove Lake, North Edge Lake, and reed ponds.
  • The addition of 10 hectares of salt flats (mudflats) to the landscape.
  • The establishment of a Green Spine and ongoing ecological monitoring.

Currently home to approximately 20,000 migratory birds annually, including the iconic flamingo, the sanctuary is projected to attract between 250,000 and 300,000 visitors upon the completion of the entire upgrade, signifying a six-fold increase in foot traffic.

Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary Development Project: Phase Two

Phase two will enhance the infrastructure and visitor experience over an extensive area of 20,000 square meters. Planned improvements include:

  • A visitor center, observation towers for birdwatching, restaurants, kiosks, and educational facilities.
  • 5.6 kilometers of cycling paths and 3 kilometers of walking trails.
  • 23 hectares of meticulously planned landscaping.
  • Dedicated areas for events and initiatives aimed at raising environmental awareness.

Crafted in collaboration with the Dubai Environment and Climate Change Authority, this project has already garnered seven prestigious international and regional awards, underscoring the innovative approach taken by Dubai Municipality toward sustainable development and environmental design.

Marwan Ahmed bin Ghalita, the Director General of Dubai Municipality, emphasized the importance of the Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary Development Project, stating, “This initiative is among the most significant environmental infrastructure projects undertaken by Dubai Municipality. With its unique design, it represents a key milestone in preserving and developing our natural reserves.” He further noted the commitment to protecting biodiversity through innovative practices that foster sustainable growth and ecological balance.

Having been designated as the first UAE site under the Ramsar Convention in 2007, the Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary is also classified according to guidelines set by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). It hosts nearly 450 species of flora and fauna, playing an essential role in maintaining the ecological equilibrium of the region.
