The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) of Dubai has officially launched the revitalization project for Hessa Street, a major initiative designed to enhance traffic flow from Sheikh Zayed Road to Al Khail Road. Spanning 4.5 kilometers, this project marks a significant upgrade to the urban transport infrastructure, featuring multi-lane expansions and improved traffic intersections. With the completion of the Hessa Street development, Dubai aims to significantly reduce travel time and improve overall road safety.
Recently, the RTA announced the completion of all work related to the Hessa Street development project. This initiative extends from Sheikh Zayed Road to Al Khail Road over a length of 4.5 kilometers. The upgrades involve widening the street and its intersecting bridges at key junctions, allowing for four lanes in each direction. Consequently, the project is expected to facilitate smoother traffic flow between Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Khail Road, decreasing travel time from 15 minutes to just four minutes.
Matar Al Tayer, the Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors at the RTA, stated during a recent site visit: “This project is a crucial step in completing the infrastructure of our road network, as directed by the wise leadership. Our goal is to enhance traffic fluidity and keep pace with the continuous development in Dubai.” Al Tayer emphasized that Hessa Street serves as a vital artery connecting several residential and developmental areas, including Al Sufouh 2 and Al Barsha, projecting that over 640,000 residents will benefit from these improvements by 2030.
Moreover, the project aims to double the street’s capacity, increasing the number of vehicles accommodated from 8,000 to 16,000 per hour in both directions. Al Tayer elaborated, “The Hessa Street development stretches from its intersection with Sheikh Zayed Road to its junction with Al Khail Road and includes upgrades at four major intersections along the way.” This bold initiative promises to significantly enhance the urban transit experience for countless commuters.
The first intersection upgrade is at Hessa Street and Sheikh Zayed Road, featuring a two-lane ramp that spans over the red line of the Dubai Metro, facilitating a seamless transition for vehicles turning right onto Hessa Street. Additionally, improvements have been made at the intersection of Hessa Street and Al Khail Road, boosting the number of lanes on the existing bridge from three to four in each direction, alongside enhancements to the traffic signals overseeing surface intersections.
The efforts also extend to the intersections with Al Asail Road and Al Khail, where the number of lanes has been increased from two to four in each direction via the addition of new bridge structures. Moreover, modifications at the Al Khail junction will see the installation of a new direct ramp for vehicles traveling north toward Sharjah, effectively increasing throughput for road users accessing key transit routes.
Lastly, the RTA has embarked on implementing the second phase of the Hessa Street development project, extending from its intersection with Al Khail Road to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road for a distance of three kilometers. This phase includes the development of three principal junctions through new bridges totaling 8,835 meters, along with a 480-meter tunnel, which is anticipated to further enhance capacity by another 100%. The project is expected to benefit around 650,000 residents, efficiently reducing journey times from 24 minutes to just five.
Overall, the Hessa Street development project represents a monumental investment in Dubai’s transportation infrastructure, reinforcing its commitment to improving the welfare of residents while meeting the demands of urban expansion.
