As part of ongoing efforts to facilitate traffic flow in the Emirate of Dubai, the Roads and Transport Authority has implemented a series of traffic solutions that have increased traffic fluidity by 40%. These initiatives include significant improvements in the connection between Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Khail Road via Al Meydan Street, enhancing the overall efficiency of the city’s transport network.
Strategic Improvements to Enhance Infrastructure
The Roads and Transport Authority in Dubai has completed a package of rapid traffic solutions to enhance the connection between Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Khail Road via Al Meydan Street. These improvements included widening the exit from Sheikh Zayed Road to Al Meydan Street from one lane to two lanes, which increased the capacity of the bridge over Al Khail Road from three to four lanes for vehicles coming from Al Khail and Al Meydan Streets towards Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Park Street, and vice versa.
These efforts demonstrate the Authority’s commitment to achieving the vision of wise leadership by meeting the demands of rapid urban and population expansion in the Emirate of Dubai. The Authority continuously seeks to develop infrastructure and enhance the efficiency of the road network, with a timeline that includes over 75 traffic improvements by 2025, aimed at supporting sustainable growth and providing a high quality of life for residents.
Increasing Capacity and Improving Traffic Flow
Among the improvements implemented, the exit number (D69) was expanded from one lane to two lanes for vehicles coming from Sheikh Zayed Road towards Al Khail and Al Meydan Streets. This expansion has doubled the capacity from 1,500 to 3,000 vehicles per hour, contributing to a reduction in travel time on the exit by up to 40% during peak hours and decreasing waiting times by up to 50%.
The Authority also increased the capacity of the bridge over Al Khail Road from three to four lanes on both sides for vehicles, resulting in a capacity increase of over 33%, from 4,500 vehicles to 6,000 vehicles per hour. This improvement reduced crossing time during peak hours from 7 minutes to 4 minutes, representing a decrease of approximately 40%.
Expanding Connections to Improve Vehicle Movement
The Authority has also expanded the connections between the surface road and the bridge over Al Khail Road from one lane to two lanes. The results of these improvements have been evident in enhancing traffic flow by alleviating congestion, leading to a reduction in waiting time by more than 50%, especially during the afternoon and evening periods.
These traffic solutions have further enhanced the flow of vehicles coming from Sheikh Zayed Road towards Al Khail Road and vice versa, reflecting the ongoing success of the Roads and Transport Authority in improving the traffic network in Dubai.
