Dubai Roads Completes 13 Bicycle Paths Across the Emirate
The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai is developing an integrated network of bicycle paths, having completed 13 paths as part of its ambitious plan that includes a total of 15 paths. These paths, distributed throughout the emirate, extend for 162 kilometers and connect vibrant areas such as Al Qusais, Al Mamzar, Al Warqa, and Saih Al Salam. The aim of this initiative is to promote safe and sustainable mobility in Dubai, transforming the city into one of the world’s best destinations for cyclists.
Sustainable Development Plans
The bicycle paths are part of a strategic plan aimed at increasing their total length to 1,000 kilometers by 2030. These plans reflect Dubai’s commitment to providing a safe and bike-friendly environment, with a focus on enhancing the quality of life. According to the Copenhagenize Index, Dubai has successfully entered the list of the top 100 bike-friendly cities in the world, thanks to infrastructure improvements and the growing use of bicycles. Mattar Al Tayer, the Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors at the RTA, confirmed that these efforts align with the directives of wise leadership to enhance road safety.
Features of the New Paths
The new paths include 13 routes extending from Al Qusais to Al Mamzar, connecting multiple areas in Dubai, with a bridge on Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road linking the Al Qusais path to Al Mamzar Beach. Additionally, new bridges for cyclists and pedestrians have been constructed on Dubai-Al Ain Road and Sheikh Zayed Road, facilitating movement. These bridges have been designed with modern technologies to ensure user safety and provide a comfortable environment.
Encouraging Bicycle Use
These paths are expected to encourage Dubai residents to use bicycles as a primary means of transportation. Field studies conducted by the RTA confirmed that the locations of the paths were chosen based on population density, business needs, and tourist areas. Enhancing the existing network is not limited to the paths alone but also includes improvements to public transport stations to facilitate overall mobility.
Future Projects
The significance of these projects also lies in their contribution to improving public transportation, connecting residential areas with major transport systems, thereby encouraging residents to adopt sustainable transport options. The RTA’s plans extend to the creation of more paths and bridges in the coming years, reflecting Dubai’s deep commitment to a sustainable future and enhancing tourism and the overall quality of life in the city.
Overall, the RTA aims to achieve new milestones in developing bicycle paths, contributing to establishing Dubai as a leading global destination for smart and sustainable mobility.
