DP World Transforms Tartous Port with Strategic Partnership

In a strategic move to develop the Port of Tartus, DP World has signed a long-term investment agreement extending for 30 years. This agreement involves an investment of $800 million, aimed at transforming the port into a vital commercial hub linking Southern Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa. This project represents a glimmer of hope for enhancing the Syrian economy and building new trade relationships in the region.

Details of the Agreement and Its Importance

Under the agreement, DP World will invest $800 million over the concession period. The agreement was signed in the capital, Damascus, in the presence of Ahmad al-Shara, President of the Syrian Arab Republic, Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, Chairman and CEO of DP World, and Quteiba Ahmad Badawi, Head of the Syrian General Authority for Land and Maritime Ports, as reported by the official Emirates News Agency.

The redevelopment of the Port of Tartus, after more than a decade of underinvestment and economic challenges, marks a pivotal point in efforts to reintegrate the Syrian economy. The project adopts a Build-Operate-Transfer model, fully owned by DP World, and will include comprehensive infrastructure upgrades and the supply of advanced equipment to facilitate cargo handling.

Modern Technology and Efficiency Improvements

The development plan for the Port of Tartus includes several technical enhancements aimed at boosting operational efficiency. Advanced digital systems will be integrated to streamline procedures and control the flow of shipments, leading to improved performance in container and general cargo terminals within the port.

Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem noted, “This agreement reflects our long-term commitment to enabling global trade, envisioning the Port of Tartus as a vibrant trade gateway,” emphasizing the importance of DP World’s investment in strengthening regional economic ties.

Future Aspirations

For his part, Quteiba Ahmad Badawi stated, “This agreement represents a significant step toward developing the Port of Tartus and enhancing the maritime transport sector in Syria.” He affirmed that the partnership with DP World will enable infrastructure modernization and improve trade efficiency, supporting efforts to re-establish vital trade routes.

The project also aims to transform the Port of Tartus into a strategic gateway connecting Syria with regional and international markets, paving the way for sustainable growth in the coming years.

Geographical Location of the Port of Tartus and Its Commercial Role

The Port of Tartus boasts a vital geographical location on the Syrian coast overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, making it the second-largest port in the country and a major maritime gateway linking trade routes between Europe, the Levant, and North Africa. This strategic location significantly enhances regional connectivity.

Through the redevelopment process, the Port of Tartus will be able to handle various types of shipments, including general cargo and containers, contributing to expanding Syria’s commercial capabilities and supporting its ongoing reconstruction and development efforts.

DP World will also explore new opportunities for collaboration with local partners to develop free zones and advanced logistics centers, supporting comprehensive economic diversification and facilitating trade on a large scale.

With DP World operating in over 75 countries, the development project for the Port of Tartus represents a significant addition to its portfolio, complementing its strategic operations in the Middle East.
